Aerospace | An apparatus which counts the number of unit charges of electricity which are contained in a sampled volume of the atmosphere. See aspiration condenser, Ebert ion counter. Compare ionization chamber. The design of the ion counter depends upon the mobility of the ions under investigation. The general procedure is to pass a sample of the atmosphere through a charged cylindrical condenser. The type of ions collected will depend upon the capacity of the condenser and the polarizing potential. The change in the potential drop across the condenser is a measure of the ionic charge collected. (references) |
