Noun

1. (physical chemistry) a surface forming a common boundary between two things (two objects or liquids or chemical phases).

2. (computer science) a program that controls a display for the user (usually on a computer monitor) and that allows the user to interact with the system.

3. The overlap where two theories or phenomena affect each other or have links with each other; "the interface between chemistry and biology".

Specialty Definitions: Interface

DomainDefinitions

Computing

Interface A boundary across which two systems communicate. An interface might be a hardware connector used to link to other devices, or it might be a convention used to allow communication between two software systems. Often there is some intermediate component between the two systems which connects their interfaces together. For example, two EIA-232 interfaces connected via a serial cable. See also graphical user interface, Application Program Interface. (1996-05-22). Source: The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing.

Aerospace

1. A common boundary between two parts of a system, whether material or nonmaterial. 2. Specifically, in a rocket vehicle or other mechanical assembly, a common boundary between two components. See mating. 3. Specifically, in fluid dynamics, a surface separating two fluids across which there is a discontinuity of some fluid property such as density or velocity or of some derivative of these properties in a direction normal to the interface. The equations of motion do not apply at the interface but are replaced by the boundary conditions. Specialty Definition: Interface

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

In general usage, an interface is the point, area, or surface along which two substances or other qualitatively different things meet; it is also used metaphorically for the juncture between items.

Telecommunications

In telecommunication, the term interface (I/F) has the following meanings:

1. In a system, a shared boundary, i.e., the boundary between two subsystems or two devices.

2. A shared boundary between two functional units, defined by specific attributes, such as functional characteristics, common physical interconnection characteristics, and signal characteristics.

3. A point of communication between two or more processes, persons, or other physical entities.

4. A point of interconnection between user terminal equipment and commercial communications facilities.

5. To interconnect two or more entities at a common point or shared boundary.

Computer Science

In computer science, an interface is a means for both abstraction and encapsulation through which method signatures and related constants are defined, but the details of implementation are intentionally left undefined.
