A modification of the paddle wheel in which the lower parts of the paddles are placed in a close fitting box to reduce spilling of the water from the edges of the paddle, and making it possible to lift water to comparatively greater heights. The labourers sit on a wooden or bamboo scaffolding erected over the installed wheel whose paddles they push down with their foot. Source: European Union. (references)
