Specialty Definition: Immunosuppressive drug

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Immunosuppressive drugs suppress the immune system, blocking the body's ability to fight infection or foreign substances that enter the body. A person receiving an organ transplant is given these drugs to stop the body from rejecting the new organ or tissue. Cyclosporine and tacrolimus are the most commonly used immunosuppressive drug. Cortisone was the first known drug in this class.
