Computing

Hard disk (In contrast to floppy disk). One or more rigid magnetic disks rotating about a central axle with associated read/write heads and electronics, used to store data. Most hard disks are permanently connected to the drive (fixed disks) though there are also removable disks. High speed disks have an access time of 28 milliseconds or less, and low-speed disks run 65 milliseconds or more. The higher speed disks also transfer their data faster than the slower speed units. Each surface of each disk is divided into a number of evenly spaced concentric circular tracks. The set of all tracks at a given radius on all surfaces (the tracks which can be accessed without moving the heads) are known as a cylinder. Each track is divided into sectors. Disk drives are commonly characterised by the kind of interface used to connect to the computer, e.g. ATA, IDE, SCSI. See also winchester. Suchanka's PC-DISK library (http://www.pc-disk.de/). Apart from peripherals bundled with computing products, there is also a substantial after-market for peripherals such as hard disk drives and monitors. (references)

This report covers memory storage devices for personal computers, such as floppy disk drives, hard disk drives, CD-ROM drives, CD-RW drives, and DVD-ROM drives. (references)

Japan is the strongest in the low capacity segment, such as floppy disk drives (FDDs), while U.S. remains strong in the medium and high capacity segments, such as hard disk drives (HDDs). A substantial portion of Korean imports of disk storage devices, including HDDs, comes from the U.S.-owned manufacturing bases in Singapore and Thailand. (references)

Thailand

Thailand aims to be a production hub in the region for components of semiconductors, hard-disk drives and fiber optics products . Production of software, electrical appliances and wireless local loops is also on the rise to support industrial sectors such as automotive, micro controller and other high technology industries . Production in the telecommunication industry in Thailand is expected to grow 30 percent over the next five years . Supporting industries, especially leasing of machinery to produce hard disk drives and assemble IC and PCB will also rise . All production and test equipment is imported, with the US share about 5-10 percent of total importation . Plant executives usually make procurement of equipment for midstream to downstream manufacturing such as assembly and surface mounting machines, while the head office decides procurement of upstream technology .
