GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM

Specialty Definition: GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM

DomainDefinition

Computing

Global Positioning System (GPS) A system for determining postion on the Earth's surface by comparing radio signals from several satellites. When completed the system will consist of 24 satellites equipped with radio transmitters and atomic clocks. Depending on your geographic location, the GPS receiver samples data from up to six satellites, it then calculates the time taken for each satellite signal to reach the GPS receiver, and from the difference in time of reception, determines your location. Agriculture

A network of satellites that can be used by ground-based units to precisely determine their location by latitude and longitude. GPS is part of the infrastructure required to operate geographic information systems that are used to practice precision farming. (GPS). (references)

Food & Agriculture

A system of earth orbiting satellites from which very accurate information on position, course and speed can be derived. When the system is complete a number of satellites will be in radio line of sight at all times, giving continuous accessibility. The system also provides aircraft with altitude information. Mining

A satellite-based navigational system permitting the determination of any point on the Earth with high accuracy. Abbrev: GPS. GPS is used in mapping, mineral exploration, and GIS data collection. The systems depend on the Navigation Satellite Timing and Ranging (NAVSTAR) GPS developed and operated by the U.S. Department of Defense, which consists of a network of 25 satellites in orbit about the Earth as well as ground operations support. After all the satellites are deployed, GPS will provide all-weather, worldwide, two- and three-dimensional (latitude, longitude, and elevation) positioning capabilities over a 24-h period. (references)

Science

A system consisting of 25 satellites in 6 orbital planes at 20,000 km altitude with 12 hr periods, used to provide highly precise position, velocity and time information to users anywhere on Earth or in its neighborhood at any time. (GPS). (references)

Space

(GPS), a navigation system using about 20 satellites in 12-hour orbits, distributed evenly around Earth. These satellites continually broadcast their positions. and a small instrument, receiving signals of 3 or more such satellites, can calculate its position within about 10 meters. The system was created by the US military, which can get from it even more accurate positions. The Russian GLONASS system is similar. (references)
