DomainDefinition

Bible

Gift (1.) An gratuity (Prov. 19:6) to secure favour (18:16; 21:14), a thank-offering (Num. 18:11), or a dowry (Gen. 34:12). (2.) An oblation or proppitatory gift (2Sa 8:2,6; 1Ch 18:2,6; 2Ch 26:8; Ps. 45:12; 72:10). (3.) A bribe to a judge to obtain a favourable verdict (Ex. 23:8; Deut. 16:19). (4.) Simply a thing given (Matt. 7:11; Luke 11:13; Eph. 4:8); sacrifical (Matt. 5:23, 24; 8:4); eleemosynary (Luke 21:1); a gratuity (John 4:10; Acts 8:20). In Acts 2:38 the generic word dorea is rendered "gift." It differs from the charisma (1 Cor. 12:4) as denoting not miraculous powers but the working of a new spirit in men, and that spirit from God. The giving of presents entered largely into the affairs of common life in the East. The nature of the presents was as various as were the occasions: food (1 Sam. 9:7; 16:20), sheep and cattle (Gen. 32:13-15), gold (2 Sam. 18:11), jewels (Gen. 24:53), furniture, and vessels for eating and drinking (2 Sam. 17:28); delicacies, as spices, honey, etc. (1 Kings 10:25; 2 Kings 5: 22). The mode of presentation was with as much parade as possible: the presents were conveyed by the hands of servants (Judg. 3:18), or still better, on the backs of beasts of burden (2 Kings 8:9). The refusal of a present was regarded as a high indignity; and this constituted the aggravated insult noticed in Matt. 22:11, the marriage robe having been offered and refused. Dream Interpretation

To dream that you receive gifts from any one, denotes that you will not be behind in your payments, and be unusually fortunate in speculations or love matters.
To send a gift, signifies displeasure will be shown you, and ill luck will surround your efforts.
For a young woman to dream that her lover sends her rich and beautiful gifts, denotes that she will make a wealthy and congenial marriage. Source: Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted ....

Specialty Definition: Gift

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

A gift or present is the transfer of money or goods without requiring something in return; by extension it can be anything that makes the other more happy or less sad, especially as a favor, including forgiveness, and kindness (even when the other is not kind).

The background may be:

The extent to which the clause "without requiring something in return" really applies may vary. Reciprocity is common and often socially almost compulsory.

In Roman mythology, Clementia was the goddess of forgiveness and mercy.

GiFT

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

giFT stands for giFT: Internet File Transfer. It is a daemon that is intended to act as a bridge to combine the capability of using several (peer-to-peer or otherwise) file sharing protocols for a simple GUI client. It uses the 'plugin' paradigm to dynamically load different protocols for a client as and when required. The currently supported networks include Gnutella and OpenFT, giFT's own file sharing network. A FastTrack network (used by Kazaa) plugin is in beta, and an OpenNap plugin is in the works. (see below for links.)

A lightweight protocol is used by clients to communicate with the giFT process, allowing the protocol code to be completely abstracted from the user interface. There are already several GUI front-ends available for giFT for use under both Windows, Macintosh, and Linux.

giFT has strong ties with its sibling project OpenFT, a peer-to-peer file sharing network protocol that incorporates the concept of 'search' nodes and 'index' supernodes in addition of common nodes. Supernodes is a concept that was first conceived in the proprietory FastTrack protocol currently used by Kazaa.

giFT was written using relatively cross-platform C code. At the time of this writing giFT 0.11.2 has been released--using an up-to-date version requires pulling the source code from CVS and compiling it manually.

According to the giFT documentation:

"Search nodes handle search requests. They search the filelists their CHILD (common) nodes submitted to them. These nodes must have a capable Internet connection and at least 128M RAM. A modern processor is highly recommended as well"

and

"INDEX nodes keep lists of available search nodes, collect statistics, and try to maintain the structure of the network."

Gift - Content based image retrieval system

The GNU Image Finding Tool is a Content Based Image Retrieval System (CBIRS). You can do Query By Example on images, giving you the opportunity to improve query results by relevance feedback. The program relies entirely on the content of the images to process queries, so you needn't annotate images before querying the collection.

It comes with a tool which lets you index whole directory trees containing images in one go. You then can use the GIFT server and its client, SnakeCharmer (separate package), to browse your own image collections.

The GIFT is an open framework for content-based image retrieval. We explicitly have taken into account the possibility of adding new ways of querying to the framework. Our communication protocol for client-server communication, MRML, is XML based and fully documented (http://www.mrml.net). This aims at promoting code reuse among researchers and application developers. Inquiries about APIs and how to integrate new clients/servers into the framework are welcome (send questions to [1] or the maintainer [3]).

The current version of the GIFT can be seen in action at [1]

The latest version can be found and downloaded at [2]

The GIFT (ex Viper) is the result of a research effort at the Vision Group at the CUI (computer science center) of the University of Geneva (see [1]). This cutting-edge research has been the subject of several publications and conference talks. Details can be found at [1].
