Mining

A device used in borehole surveying. A tube, containing a compass floating in molten gelatin, is lowered to the point in the borehole at which its verticality is required. It is left in position until the gelatin sets and is then withdrawn. The compass indicates the direction and a small plumbbob shows the angle of dip. (references)
