Gap is the préfecture (capital) of the Hautes-Alpes département in France.
History
Originally founded by the Gauls, the Roman emperor Augustus seized the town in 14 BC and renamed it Vapincum. Gap was annexed by the French crown in 1512.
Napoleon I left Elba in February of 1815 and had reached Gap on March 15 with 40 horsemen and 10 grenadiers where he had thousands of copies of his Proclamations printed. The whole population of the city accompanied Napoleon when he left Gap.
Geography
An Alpine crossroads at the intersection of D994 and Route Nationale 85 the Route Napoléon, Gap lies 2,406 feet above sea level along the right bank of the Luye River (close to where it joins the Durance River).
The Gap is one of the world's largest clothing retailers.
GAP is a mathematical interactive programming language for research, similar to Mathematica, but group orientated. Its name stand for "Groups, Algorithms and Programming".
GAP-Intro
What is GAP?
GAP is a system for computational discrete algebra with particular emphasis on, but not restricted to computational group theory. GAP was developed at Lehrstuhl D für Mathematik (LDFM), RWTH Aachen, Germany from 1986 to 1997. After the retirement of J. Neubüser from the chair of LDFM, the development and maintenance of GAP is coordinated by the School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. Several users have contributed to the system via share packages which can be used in the same form as the main library. There are presently (Jul. '99) two versions in distribution:
Version 4 .3 (GAP 4r3), incorporates several new basic features developed over the last years. In particular it provides much improved possibilities for defining mathematical structures of your own special interest.
Version 3.4, patchlevel 4, (GAP 3.4.4) released April 1997 is still available as some of its features and share packages are not yet available for GAP 4. However it is not developed further any longer.
In the sequel whenever we make statements about both of them, we will refer to "GAP".
GAP and its sources, including share packages, data library and the manual, are distributed freely, subject to copyleft conditions (which are detailed on our web pages mentioned below). Please cite the GAP manual if you use GAP in research (again see the web page).
GAP runs on any Unix system, under Windows 9x, and on Macintosh systems. It requires a minimum of 32 MB disk space, the full distribution (including all share packages and extensive data library) takes about 300 MB. To run GAP one needs a minimum of 20 MB of main memory, for most purposes 128 MB are sufficient. More details about the system, the software itself and instructions how to obtain and to install it can be found at http://www.gap-system.org. If you have no web access we are prepared to send you this information in other form. Please contact: The GAP Group, Mathematical Institute, St. Andrews, Scotland, Tel. +44/1334/463251, Fax 463278, e-mail: gap@dcs.st-and.ac.uk.
It runs in textmode with an additional X-Window interface.

Some station platforms on the London Underground railway are curved. Since the carriages are straight, the distance from the platform to the carriage is greater than normal, and at such stations the words "MIND THE GAP" are painted on the edge of the platform. A recorded announcement is also played whenever a train arrives at a station, consisting of "Mind the Gap" repeated over and over, followed by "Stand clear of the doors, please." as the train is about to depart. The Central Line platforms at Bank and the Bakerloo Line platforms at Piccadilly Circus are some of the more extreme examples.
Deep level tube trains have a floor height around 20cms less than cut-and-cover trains. Where these trains share platforms, for example some Piccadilly Line (deep level) and District Line (cut-and-cover) stations the platform is built as a compromise between the two. Therefore the "mind the gap" warning is used in this situation as well.
The phrase is well enough known for London Underground to print it on T-Shirts sold to the public.
The phrase also inspired a song of the same name by Judge Dread.
The phrase is also used by other transit systems, notably the Toronto Transit Commission who have their own logo posted prominently in all train stations:
