Literature | Friday is the Mahometan Sabbath. It was the day on which Adam was created and our Lord was crucified. The Sabeans consecrate it to Venus or Astarte. (See Frea.) Friday is Frig-daeg = dies Verneris, called in French Vendredi, which means the same thing. It was regarded by the Scandinavians as the luckiest day of the week. (See below, Friday, Unlucky. Friday. Fairies and all the tribes of elves of every description, according to mediæval romance, are converted into hideous animals on Friday, and remain so till Monday. Thus Mrs. Quickly says, "'Tis a long loan for a poor lone woman to bear" (2 Henry IV. ii. 1), and the Scotch proverb, "Between you and the long day" - i.e. the great or judgment day. Good Friday in Danish is Langfiedag, and in Swedish Längfredag. Friday A man Friday. A faithful and submissive attendant, ready to turn his hand to anything. My man Friday. Friday is the day of the week between Thursday and Saturday. Its name is derived from the Saxon god Freyja, whose Norse equivalent is Freyr.
In most areas with a five-day working week, Friday is the last workday before the weekend and is therefore viewed as a cause for celebration or relief, leading to the expression TGIF, an acronym for Thank God It's Friday. (That phrase was popularized by a movie during the 1970s.) Friday is also the inspiration for the restaurant, aptly named, TGI Fridays Worldwide. http://www.tgifridays.com In Islam, Friday is the day of public worship in mosques.
The Jewish Sabbath begins at sunset on Friday and runs until sunset on Saturday.
Friday is also the name of a film featuring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker. Friday was the name of a cannibal, who became the servant of Robinson Crusoe.

Robert Heinlein's novel Friday was published in 1982. This book tells the story of a female "artificial person" named Friday, set in the not-too-distant future. Friday is employed by a private intelligence agency as a courier, often carrying valuable information in a pouch in her belly. She differs anatomically in being much stronger and faster than other humans. Since artificial humans are widely resented, much of the story deals with Friday's attempts to win against prejudice, along with her attempts to conceal her gifts from other humans. This occurs against a backdrop of general social collapse that is intended to represent the irreversible decline of Western Civilization.References
