(Reproduction Number: HAER, WASH,17-SEAT,10-16) Historic ships are among the most difficult objects to preserve and few vessels survive long enough to be considered historic. Those that do require expensive maintenance to be operational. The 1897 schooner Wawona was put into a floating dry dock in 1985 to allow necessary periodic repairs to the wooden hull. While the hull was accessible, HAER measured and mapped the shape of the hull in a series of topographic drawings, a process called "lines-lifting." This lumber schooner was the first project of HAER's ongoing maritime program. (See HABS/HAER, National Park Service for more history.).
