Aerospace | 1. A bright eruption form the sun's chromosphere. Compare prominence. Flares may appear within minutes and fade within an hour. They cover a wide range of intensity and size, and they tend to occur between sunspots or over their penumbrae. Flares are related to radio fadeouts and terrestrial magnetic disturbances. Flares eject high energy protons which present a serious hazard to men in unshielded spacecraft. 2. Pyrotechnic devices used for signaling or to provide illumination.3. An expansion at the end of a cylindrical body as at the base of a rocket. (references) |

Space | (Solar flare)a rapid outburst on the Sun, usually in the vicinity of active sunspots. A sudden brightening (only rarely seen without special filters, isolating the red light of hydrogen) may be followed by the signatures of particle acceleration to high energiesx-rays, radio noise and often, a bit later, the arrival of high-energy ions from the Sun. Flares appear to be associated with rapid energy releases high above the photosphere, apparently from the magnetic fields of sunspots. Their link to coronal mass ejections, which may also be powered by magnetic energy, is still unclear. (references) |

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)
A flare is a type of pyrotechnic that produces a long-duration brilliant light without an explosion. Flares are sometimes launched into the air with a rocket and then suspended from a small parachute to slow its descent, providing a temporary source of light for a large area of land. They are sometimes lit on the ground to use as a signal. Flares generally produce their light through the combustion of magnesium metal, sometimes colored by the inclusion of other metals.See also:
- Very flare (WWI)
A gas flare is a tall chimney used by oil wells and refineries to vent waste natural gas and other flammable gases that are not economical to retain. The flammable gases are burned as they exit the chimney, producing a bright flame.
Also known as bellbottoms, flares are a style of pants in which the bottom ends of the legs broaden out into wide bell-like shapes.
A solar flare is an eruption of plasma from the surface of the sun. Solar flares result in a surge in the density and velocity of the solar wind, which can cause radiation damage to equipment located beyond Earth's magnetosphere.
A flare is also an aircraft landing maneuvre. It is a short skid of the tyres on the plane. The plane's wheels are preferrably stationary when landing to enhance the grip of the aircraft to the runway.

Flare is a science fiction novel by Roger Zelazny and Thomas Timoux Thomas, published in 1992.Flare describes the world as it may be in 2081, and the effects a future inter-planetry civilization would suffer if a solar flare occurred after almost 100 years without any solar activity.
The book takes a scientific approach to the idea, including almost no tangible story line. It is broken into short segments which describe different people in various places suffering from the effects of the solar flare.

Flare Technology was a trio of ex-Sinclair employees based in Cambridge in the UK.Founded in 1986 by Martin Brennan, Ben Cheese and John Mathieson they initially did work for Amstrad whilst developing the 8-bit technology demonstrator the Flare 1, based on the ZX Spectrum under the codename Loki. With expertise in ASIC design they where able to sell the concept of a highly integrated custom console to Konix and were commissioned to develop the Konix Multisystem.
Martin Brennan and John Mathieson went on to found Flare II which designed the Atari Jaguar. Other companies called Flare Technology also exist.
