Literature

Finger (Anglo-Saxon, finger).
The ear finger, digitus auricularis - i.e. the little finger. The four fingers are the index finger, the middle finger, the ring finger, and the ear finger. In French, le doigt auriculaire. The little finger is so called because it can, from its diminutive size, be most easily introduced into the conduit of the ear.
"Le doigt auriculaire est le petit doight, ainsi nommé parce qu'a cause de sa petitesse, il peut facilement être introduit dans le conduit auditif externe." - Dict. des Sciences, etc.
The index finger. The first finger; so called because it is used as a pointer.
The medical finger. The ring finger (q.v.).
"At last he put on her medical finger a pretty, handsome gold ring, whereinto was enchased a precious toadstone of Beausse." - Rabelais: Pantagruel, iii. 17.
The ring finger. The finger between the long and little finger was used by the Romans as a ring-finger, from the belief that a nerve ran through it to the heart. Hence the Greeks and Romans used to call it the medical finger, and used it for stirring mixtures, under the notion that nothing noxious could touch it without its giving instant warning to the heart. It is still a very general notion in England that it is bad to rub on salve or scratch the skin with any but the ring finger. The fact that there was no such intimacy between the finger and the heart was not discovered till after the notion was deeply rooted. Pliny calls this digitus annularis.
With a wet finger. Easily. (See Wet Finger.)
My little finger told me that. The same as "A little bird told me that," meaning, I know it, though you did not expect it. The former expression is from Moliée's Malade Imaginaire. (See Bird.)
"By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes."
Shakespeare: Macbeth, iv. l.
Cry, baby, cry; put your finger in your eye, etc. This nursery rhyme seem to be referred to by Shakespeare in his Comedy of Errors, ii. 2: -
"No longer will I be fool,
To put the finger in the eye and weep."
To hold up a finger (in an auction room) by way of a bid, was a Roman custom, "digitum tollere" (Cicero: In Verrem, Actio i. 54). Horace confirms this. Source: Brewer's Dictionary.

See also finger protocol

The finger is any of the digits of the hand in humans and other species such as the great apes. The grace of the fingers is not sacrificed to their dexterity due to the placement of their muscles in the forearm, with motion communicated via long tendons which may be observed on the back of the hand. A notable exception is the thumb, with its flexor and rotators comprised in the hand itself.

The bones of the fingers are called phalanges (singular phalanx); the thumb has two phalanges, and the other fingers have three. The fingers have common names from the thumb inward: thumb, index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and little finger or pinky.

Relative to much of the skin of the human body, the fingertips have a high concentration of nerve endings, equipping them as centers of tactile sensation; touching something or someone is often done with the hands and in particular the fingers. Another important example of this capacity is in the ability to read Braille. Additionally, prehension is enhanced by the presence of the ridges and whorls known as fingerprints. Each finger is protected at its dorsal terminus by a fingernail (Latin unguis, unguiculus).

Finger protocol

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The finger protocol is a simple network protocol based on RFC1196 (The Finger User Information Protocol). Typically the server side of the protocol is implemented by a program "fingerd" (for finger daemon), while the client side is implemented by the "name" and "finger" programs. The program is supposed to return a friendly, human-oriented status report on either the system at the moment or a particular person in depth. There is no required format, and the protocol consists mostly of specifying a single command line. It is most often implemented on Unix or Unix-like systems.

The program would supply information such as whether a user is currently logged-on, e-mail address, full name etc. As well as standard user information, finger displays the contents of ".plan" file in the user's home directory. Often this file (maintained by the user) contained either useful information about the user's current activities, or alternatively all manner of humor.

Supplying such detailed information was considered acceptable and convenient in the early days of the Internet, but later was considered questionable for privacy and security reasons. Finger information has been frequently used by crackerss as a way to initiate a social engineering attack on a company's computer security system. By using a finger client to get a list of a company's employee names, email addresses, phone numbers, and so on, a cracker can telephone or email someone at a company requesting information while posing as another employee. Information garnered from finger can be used both to find an employee to contact directly, and to more effectively pose as an existing employee. The finger daemon has also had several exploitable security holes which crackers have used to break into systems.

For these reasons, while finger was widely used during the early days of Internet, by the 1990s the vast majority of sites on the internet no longer offered the service. Notable exceptions include John Carmack, who still updates his status information occasionally.
