The musical interval of a perfect fifth is the relationship between the first note (the root or tonic) and the fifth note in a major scale. It can be produced by starting on a high note and playing the fifth below or by starting on a low note and playing the fifth above.
An "ideal" perfect fifth in just intonation corresponds to a pitch ratio of 2:3 or 1:1.5
In an equal tempered tuning, a perfect fifth is equal to seven semitones, a ratio of 1:27/12 or approximately 1.4983.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C Minor was written in 1807-1808. It is Beethoven's Opus 67 and was dedicated to F. J. von Lobkowitz and Graf (Count) A. von Rasumovsky.
The work was performed for the first time in Vienna on 22 December 1808. Though it received little notice during its premiere, another performance a year and a half later was well-reviewed by E.T.A. Hoffman, and its reputation has grown since.
The work is in four movements:
The first movement follows the sonata form and opens with a four-note motif, probably one of the most famous in western music:
- I. Allegro con brio
- II. Andante con moto
- III. Allegro
- IV. Allegro
This opening statement has been described by others as "Fate knocking at the door", which serves to give imagery to the dark, tense, and energetic mood of the movement. The four-note motif is repeated in various forms throughout the symphony and serves to unite it thematically.
The second movement is a lyrical movement which follows a theme and variations form. This relatively relaxed movement is a respite from the darkness of the first movement.
The third movement is a scherzo, which returns to the dark mood of the first movement. A transitional passage takes the music from C minor to the C major of the finale, which proceeds without a pause (Beethoven had tried a similar key change from B flat minor to B flat major at the opening of his Symphony No. 4). The allegro finale is interrupted by a brief, haunting reprise of the scherzo theme before the symphony ends triumphantly in C major.

The Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor by Gustav Mahler was written in 1901 and 1902 mostly during the summer months at Mahler's cottage at Maiernigg. The piece is scored for a large orchestra made up of four flutes (two doubling piccolo), three oboes (one doubling cor anglais), three clarinets (one doubling bass clarinet), three bassoons (one doubling double bassoon); six French horns, four trumpets, three trombones, tuba; four timpani, cymbals, bass drum, side drum, triangle, glockenspiel, tamtam, wood clapper, harp and strings.
The piece is generally regarded as Mahler's most conventional symphony up to that point, but from such an unconventional composer it still had many peculiarities. It almost has a four movement structure, as the first two can easily be viewed as essentailly a whole. The symphony also ends with a Rondo, in the classical style. Some peculiariteis are the funeral march that opens the piece, and the Adagietto for harp and strings that interupts the booming score.
The work is in five movements:
The first two movements constitute Part I of the symphony (as designated by Mahler in the score), the long Scherzo constitutes Part II, and the last two movements constitute Part III.
- Trauermarsch (Death March)
- Stürmisch bewegt, mit grösster Vehemenz (Moving stormily, with the greatest vehemence)
- Scherzo
- Adagietto
- Rondo-Finale
The adagietto is sometimes heard alone. It was used liberally in Luchino Visconti's film, Death in Venice.
Premieres
- World premiere: October 18, 1904, Cologne - conducted by Mahler
- United States premiere: March 24, 1905, Cincinnati - conducted by Frank van der Stucken
- English premiere:
- Of Adagietto only: August 31, 1909, London - conducted by Henry Wood during a Proms concert
- Of complete work: October 21, 1945, London - London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Heinz Unger

A fourth affirms, with Haeckel, the condensation of precipitation of matter from ether -- whose existence is proved by the condensation of precipitation. The present trend of scientific thought is toward the theory of ions. The ion differs from the molecule, the corpuscle and the atom in that it is an ion. A fifth theory is held by idiots, but it is doubtful if they know any more about the matter than the others. |
