Computing

Error 1. A discrepancy between a computed, observed, or measured value or condition and the true, specified, or theoretically correct value or condition. 2. A mental mistake made by a programmer that may result in a program fault. 3. (verb) What a program does when it stops as result of a programming error. (2000-03-28). 1. In mathematics, the difference between the true value and a calculated or observed value. A quantity (equal in magnitude to the error) added to a calculated or observed value to obtain the true value is called a correction. 2. In a computer or data-processing system, any incorrect step, process, or result. In addition to the mathematically usage, in the computer field the term is also commonly used to refer to machine malfunctions as machine errors and to human mistakes as human errors. It is frequently helpful to distinguish between these as follows: errors result from approximations used in numerical methods; mistakes result from incorrect programming, coding, data transcription, manual operation, etc.; malfunction result from failures in the operation of machine components such as gates, flip-flops, amplifiers, etc. (references)

Mathematics

In a more limited sense the word "error" is used in statistics to denote the difference between an occurring value and its "true" or "expected" value. There is here no imputation of mistake on the part of a human agent; the deviation is a chance effect. In this sense we have, for example, errors of observations, errors in equations, errors of the first and second kinds in testing hypotheses, and the error band surrounding an estimate; and also the normal curve of errors itself. Specialty Definition: Error

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

An error has different meanings in different domains. The meaning in the some of those domains are described below.

statistics

An error is a difference between a computed, estimated, or measured value and the true, specified, or theoretically correct value. See also error function

engineering

An error is a difference between desired and actual performance. Engineers often seek to design systems in such a way as to mitigate or even avoid the effects of error. See also Observational error

telecommunication

An error is a deviation from a correct value caused by a malfunction in a system or a functional unit. An example would be the occurrence of a wrong bit caused by an equipment malfunction. (Sources: Federal Standard 1037C and MIL-STD-188). See also error-correcting code and error-detecting code

linguistics

An individual language user's deviations from standard language paradigms are sometimes referred to as errors. At present, this usage is not widely used, as it connotes a value judgement about what what linguistic forms should and should not be used, something many modern linguists seek to avoid.

biology

An error is said to occur when perfect fidelity is lost in the copying of information. For example, in an asexually reproducing species, an error has occurred for each DNA nucleotide that differs between the child and the parent. Errors in this sense are not judged as "good" or "bad", although an error may make an organism either more or less adapted to its environment.

baseball

An error is judged by the official scorer when A runner advances a base because of a fielding mistake; Perfect play would have prevented the advancement; and The mistake was physical. Mental misjudgements are not errors. Failing to get more than one out on given play is not an error. The enforcment of this rule is necessarily subjective.

Error (baseball statistics)

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

In baseball, an error is the act, in the judgment of the official scorer, of a fielder misplaying a ball in a manner that allows a batter or runner to reach one or more additional bases, on a play that would normally be completed successfully with ordinary effort.

A passed ball or a wild pitch is not considered an error.
