Medicine

Tract of the aorta which is about 3 cm wide at its origin from the base of the heart and extends 5 to 6 cm cephalad to join the aortic arch. Normally it lies just to the right of the midline. Its proximal portion is within the pericardial cavity. Nearby structures include the pulmonary trunk in front and the left atrium, the right pulmonary artery and the right main stem bronchus behind.
