Economic History

Uzbekistan

Import levels have dropped from a high of 4.2 billion in 1996 to 2.6 billion in 1999. Exports have also dropped, from a high of 3.7 billion in 1997 to under $3 billion in 1999, of which raw cotton exports account for about 35%. By this drastic reduction in trade, Uzbekistan has managed to eke out a modest balance of payments surplus of $359 million in 1999. Cotton export revenues are very vulnerable to low harvests and to low cotton prices; low harvests in 1998 and 2000 were offset by higher prices, but the higher 1999 harvest was offset by lower prices, leaving overall cotton export income fairly steady at about $1.1 billion.
