Mining

The process by which limestone is wholly or partly converted to dolomite rock or dolomitic limestone by the replacement of the original calcium carbonate (calcite) by magnesium carbonate (mineral dolomite), usually through the action of magnesium-bearing water (seawater or percolating meteoric water). It can occur penecontemporaneously or shortly after deposition of the limestone, or during lithification at a later period.Syn:dolomization. (references)
