Dream Interpretation | To dream that you eat your dinner alone, denotes that you will often have cause to think seriously of the necessaries of life. For a young woman to dream of taking dinner with her lover, is indicative of a lovers' quarrel or a rupture, unless the affair is one of harmonious pleasure, when the reverse may be expected. To be one of many invited guests at a dinner, denotes that you will enjoy the hospitalities of those who are able to extend to you many pleasant courtesies. Dinner is a term with several meanings. In North America, dinner is a synonym of supper - that is, a large evening meal.
In parts of Canada, the United States, and Great Britain, dinner can be a synonym of lunch.
A more general definition of "dinner," especially outside North America, is any meal consisting of multiple courses. The minimum is usually two but here can be as many as seven. Possible courses are:
Some confusion is caused by the word entrée, which is used in America for the main course, but which was originally one of the earlier courses (most likely the fish course, when the main dish was red meat). In Quebec les entrées are the appetizers; it's no doubt used differently in other places.
- Hors d'oeuvres (also known as Appetisers, Starters)
- Soup course
- Fish course
- Salad course
- Main course (also known as Meat course)
- Dessert course (also known as the Sweet or Pudding course)
- Cheese course
Dinner is generally followed by tea or coffee, sometimes served with mint chocolates or other sweets, or with brandy or a digestif. When dinner consists of many courses, these tend to be smaller and to be served over a longer time period than a dinner with only two or three courses. Dinners with many courses tend to occur at formal events such as dinner parties or banquets.
The meal is generally served in the evening, starting some time between 7:30 and 8:30 (in the Netherlands typically at 6:00). It may be served at midday or shortly afterwards. However this tends to be more common practice in Scotland than in other countries.

Lunch is a meal that is taken at noon or in the early afternoon. The term is short for "luncheon" (see below). Lunch is sometimes called "dinner" in Great Britain and parts of the United States and Canada.Lunch food varies. In some places, very similar things are eaten at lunch as at dinner - a hot meal, sometimes with more than one course. In other places, lunch is actually the main meal of the day, supper being a smaller cold meal. However, since many people eat lunch while at work or school, this can be impractical; more appropriate are relatively simple foods that can be packed in a lunch box. The quintessential lunch food in North America is the sandwich.
Employers and schools usually provide a lunch break in the middle of the day, lasting as much as an hour.
Lunch can often be served as entertainment, especially on weekends; a particularly fancy or formal lunch can be called a luncheon. Such lunches can be served at a restaurant, as a buffet or potluck, or as a sit-down feast. These events are very similar to festive suppers.
Lunch, both simple and fancy, often includes dessert.
Many nutritionists suggest that it is more appropriate to eat a large meal at lunch than it is to do so at supper, just prior to going to sleep, when the energy from the meal will not be properly used.
Continental French for "lunch" is déjeuner, Quebecois French is dîner; in Spanish it is almuerzo, in Italian it is pranzo, in German it is Mittagessen, and in Esperanto it is tagmanĝo (or lunĉo).
