Computing | Delta n. 1. [techspeak] A quantitative change, especially a small or incremental one (this use is general in physics and engineering). "I just doubled the speed of my program!" "What was the delta on program size?" "About 30 percent." (He doubled the speed of his program, but increased its size by only 30 percent.) 2. [Unix] A diff, especially a diff stored under the set of version-control tools called SCCS (Source Code Control System) or RCS (Revision Control System). 3. n. A small quantity, but not as small as epsilon. The jargon usage of delta and epsilon stems from the traditional use of these letters in mathematics for very small numerical quantities, particularly in `epsilon-delta' proofs in limit theory (as in the differential calculus). The term delta is often used, once epsilon has been mentioned, to mean a quantity that is slightly bigger than epsilon but still very small. "The cost isn't epsilon, but it's delta" means that the cost isn't totally negligible, but it is nevertheless very small. Common constructions include `within delta of --', `within epsilon of --': that is, `close to' and `even closer to'. Source: Jargon File. |

Delta (upper case Δ, lower case δ) is the 4th letter of the Greek alphabet. In the system of Greek numerals is has a value of 4.
In mathematics and science, delta is used with a variable to indicate a change in the value of that variable. Usually, an upper case delta (e.g. Δx) is used for large or macroscopic changes, and a lower case delta (e.g. δx) is for small or microscopic changes.
The lower-case letter δ is used in proofreading to indicate deletion. The usage is said to date back to classical times.
The term river delta is named after the letter delta because it has roughly the shape of the upper-case delta.

Delta Air Lines is a US based airline company. Delta flies both domestic and international, servicing a large number of airports within the USA. It has the IATA call code DL.
The company has its roots in Huff Daland Dusters, which was founded in 1924, and through a number of mergers and acquisitions became the company it is today.
Delta operates Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as its chief hub, as well as hubs in Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport in Hebron, Kentucky, near Cincinnati, Ohio and Salt Lake City International Airport in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Delta is based in Atlanta, Georgia, where it moved its headquarters in 1941.
Delta Air Lines currently employ more than 60000 people, and services 428 cities in 76 countries. Among the cities and places they serve: Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, various destinations in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, India, many European cities, Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil and Narita, Japan's New Tokyo International Airport (nearby Tokyo, Japan)
Delta is part of the SkyTeam alliance, and codeshares with SNCF French Rail to rail stations in France.
On the morning of August 2, 1985, Delta Air Lines Flight 191, which was on a Fort Lauderdale-Dallas-Los Angeles route, crashed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, killing 136 of the 167 passengers on board. The crash would later become the subject of a television movie.
On August 31, 1988, Delta Air Lines Flight 1411, which was bound from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport near Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas to Salt Lake City International Airport in Salt Lake City, Utah, crashed after take off from Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. 2 of 7 crew members and 12 of the 101 passengers on board lost their lives.
If Operation Bojinka wasn't discovered after an aprtment fire in Manila, Philippines, then the airline would have lost one aircraft over the Pacific Ocean flying a route to East Asia and Southeast Asia on January 21, 1995.

The Delta blues is one of the earliest styles of blues music. Born in southern Mississippi, Delta blues was first recorded in the late-1920s. String instruments (such as the slide guitar) and harmonicas dominated the music, while the vocals were passionate and fiery. Recorded delta blues is mostly one person singing and playing instruments, though bands were more common in performances. Delta blues spread out across the country, giving rise to a host of regional variations, including Chicago and Detroit blues.

The delta-wing is a wing planform in the form of a large triangle. Its use was pioneered by Alexander Lippisch prior to WWII in Germany, but none of his designs entered service. After the war the delta became the favoured design for high-speed use, and was used almost to exclusion of other planforms by Convair in the United States and Dassault in France. In early use delta-winged aircraft were often found with no other horizontal control surfaces, creating a tailless design, but most modern versions use a canard in front of the wing to modify the airflow over it, most notably during lower altitude flight. The primary advantage of the design is that the wing's leading edge remains behind the shock wave generated by the nose of the aircraft when flying at supersonic speeds, which was a distinct improvement on traditional wing designs. Another advantage is that as the angle of attack increases the leading edge of the wing generates a huge vortex which remains attached to the upper surface of the wing, making the delta have very high stall points. The combination of these two features is a dream come true, a normal wing built for high speed use is typically dangerous at low speeds, but in this regime the delta transitions to a mode of lift based on the vortex it generates.
Lippisch studied a number of ramjet powered (sometimes coal-fueled!) delta-wing interceptor aircraft during the war, one progressing as far as a glider prototype. After the war Lippisch was taken to the US, where he ended up working at Convair. Here the other engineers became very interested in his interceptor designs, and started work on a larger version known as the F-92. This project was eventually cancelled as impractical, but a prototype flying testbed was almost complete by that point, and was later flown widely as the XF-92. The design generated intense interest around the world. Soon almost every aircraft design, notably interceptors, were designed around a delta-wing. Examples include the Convair B-58 Hustler, the Avro Arrow and the MiG-21.
Deltas fell out of favour due to some undesirable characteristics, notably flow-separation at high angles of attack (swept-wings have similar problems), and high drag at low altitudes. This limited them primarily to the high-speed, high-altitude interceptor roles. A modification, the compound delta, added another much more highly swept delta wing in front of the main one, to create the vortex in a more controlled fashion and thereby reduce the low-speed drag.
As the performance of jet engines grew, fighers with more traditional planforms found they could perform almost as well as the deltas, but do so while maneuvering much harder and at a wider range of altitudes. Today a remnant of the compound delta can be found on most fighter aircraft, in the form of leading edge extensions. These are effectively very small delta wings placed so they remain out of the airflow in cruising flight, but start to generate a vortex at high angles of attack. The vortex is then captured on the top of the wing to provide additional lift, thereby combining the delta's high-alpha "trick" with a conventional highly efficient wing planform.

The Lancia Delta was a successful car sold by Lancia from 1979 to 1994. In Sweden it was sold by Saab as Saab 600.While the majority of Delta models where ordinary, compact family cars, the most famous model was the Delta HF integrale, a 4WD sport car with a very powerful engine. A tweaked version of the HF dominated for years the World Rally Championship.
Even today, one can find around Italy old HFs rallying around, with modified versions with 300 to 500 hp.

A delta is the mouth of a river where it flows into an ocean, sea, or lake, building outwards (as a deltaic deposit) from sediment carried by the river and deposited as the water current is dissipated. Deltaic deposits of larger, heavily-ladden rivers are characterised by the river channel dividing into multiple streams (distributaries), these anastomizing (dividing and coming together again) to form a maze of active and inactive channels.
The most famous delta is that of the Nile River, and it is this delta from which the term is derived, because the Nile delta has a very characteristic triangular shape, like the (upper-case) letter delta (Δ). Other rivers with notable deltas include the Ganges/Brahmaputra combination (this delta spans most of Bangladesh), the Niger, the Amazon, the Mississippi, the Rhine, the Rhône, the Danube, the Mekong, and the Ebre.
