A fluid, usually a liquid, used in metal cutting to improve finish, tool life, or dimensional accuracy. On being flowed over a tool and a workpiece, the fluid reduces friction, heat generated, and tool wear, and prevents galling. It conducts heat away from the point of generation andalso serves to wash chips away. (references)

Cutting Fluid is an emulsion of oil and water used for cooling and lubrication of machine tools that shape metals and sometimes other materials. The oil and water are mixed with detergent to form a milky white fluid that takes many days to separate.

Cutting fluid is often pumped to the cutting site in lathes, milling machines, shapers and saws.
