Agriculture

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' general measure of retail prices (for goods and services) paid by urban wage earners and clerical workers. Includes prices of about 400 items, including food, clothing, housing, medical care, and transportation. The CPI-U is commonly used to deflate time series data and is the most widely accepted measure of inflation. (CPI-U). (references)

Finance

A monthly measure of changes in the prices of goods and services consumed. The index is compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. (references)

Statistics

One of the most commonly used measures of inflation. This index measures the change in prices paid by consumers in different urban areas for an average "market basket" of hundreds of goods and services, such as food and clothing. This sampling is supposed to represent everything that the average consumer purchases for day-to-day living. The index also takes into consideration the number of these goods consumed annually and their prices. CPI figures are compared against a base period to measure how much the cost of living has changed since then. A steady percentage increase in the CPI indicates a rising rate of inflation and the erosion of the average consumer's purchasing power. Source: European Union. (references)
