In measure theory, a complete measure is a measure in which every subset of every null set is measurable (and therefore null).

Every measure has an extension that is complete. The smallest such extension is called the completion of the measure.

Suppose μ is a measure on some set X, with σ-algebra F. The completion of μ can be constructed as follows. Let N be the set of all subsets of null sets of μ, and let G be the σ-algebra generated by F and N. There is only one way to extend μ to this new σ-algebra: for every C in G, μ'(C) is defined to be the infimum of μ(D) over all D in F of which C is a subset. Then μ' is a complete measure, and is the completion of μ.

In the above construction it can be shown that every member of G is of the form A U B for some A in F and some B in N, and μ'(A U B) = μ(A).

Complete space

In mathematical analysis, a metric space M is said to be complete if every Cauchy sequence of points in M has a limit in M.

Intuitively, a space is complete if it "doesn't have any holes", if there aren't any "points missing". For instance, the rational numbers are not complete, because √2 is "missing". It is always possible to "fill all the holes", leading to the completion of a given space, as will be explained below.

Examples

The space Q of rational numbers, with the standard metric given by the absolute value, is not complete. Consider for instance the sequence defined by x1 := 1 and xn+1 := xn/2 + 1/xn. This is a Cauchy sequence of rational numbers, but it does not converge towards any rational limit; in fact, it converges towards the irrational number √2, the square root of two.

The open interval (0,1), again with the absolute value metric, is not complete either. The sequence (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, ...) is Cauchy, but does not have a limit in the space. However the closed interval [0,1] is complete; the sequence above has the limit 0 in this interval.

The space R of real numbers and the space C of complex numbers (with the metric given by the absolute value) are complete, and so is Euclidean space Rn. Other normed vector spaces may or may not be complete; those which are, are the Banach spaces.

The space Qp of p-adic numberss are complete for any prime number p. This space completes Q with the p-adic metric in the same way that R completes Q with the usual metric.

If S is an arbitrary set, then the set SN of all sequences in S becomes a complete metric space if we define the distance between the sequences (xn) and (yn) to be 1/N, where N is the smallest index for which xN is distinct from yN, or 0 if there is no such index. This space is homeomorphic to the product of a countable number of copies of the discrete space S.

Some theorems

Every compact metric space is complete. In fact, a metric space is compact if and only if it is complete and totally bounded.

A subspace of a complete space is complete if and only if it is closed.

If X is a set and M is a complete metric space, then the set B(X,M) of all bounded functions f from X to M is a complete metric space. Here we define the distance in B(X,M) in terms of the distance in M as

d(f,g) := supx d(f(x),g(x)).

If X is a topological space and M is a complete metric space, then the set Cb(X,M) consisting of all continuous bounded functions f from X to M is a closed subspace of B(X,M) and hence also complete.

The Baire category theorem says that every complete metric space is a Baire space. That is, the interior of a union of countably many nowhere dense subsets of the space is empty.

Completion

For any metric space M, one can construct a complete metric space M' (which is also denoted as M with a bar over it), which contains M as a dense subspace. It has the following universal property: if N is any complete metric space and f is any uniformly continuous function from M to N, then there exists a unique uniformly continuous function f' from M' to N which extends f. The space M' is determined up to isometry by this property, and is called the completion of M.

The completion of M can be constructed as a set of equivalence classes of Cauchy sequences in M. For any two Cauchy sequences (xn)n and (yn)n in M, we may define their distance as

d(x,y) = limn d(xn,yn).
(This limit exists because the real numbers are complete.) This is only a pseudometric, not yet a metric, since two different Cauchy sequences may have the distance 0. But "having distance 0" is an equivalence relation on the set of all Cauchy sequences, and the set of equivalence classes is a metric space, the completion of M.

Cantor's contsruction of the real numbers is a special case of this; the real numbers are the completion of the rational numbers using the ordinary absolute value to measure distances. By using different notions of distance on the rationals, one obtains different incomplete metric spaces whose completions are the p-adic numberss.

If this completion procedure is applied to a normed vector space, one obtains a Banach space containing the original space as a dense subspace, and if it is applied to an inner product space, one obtains a Hilbert space containing the original space as a dense subspace.

Topologically complete spaces

Note that completeness is a property of the metric and not of the topology, meaning that a complete metric space can be homeomorphic to a non-complete one. An example is given by the real numbers, which are complete but homeomorphic to the open interval (0,1), which is not complete. Another example is given by the irrational numbers, which are not complete as a subspace of the real numbers but are homeomorphic to NN (a special case of an example in Examples above).

In topology one considers topologically complete (or completely metrizable) spaces, spaces for which there exists at least one complete metric inducing the given topology. Completely metrizable spaces can be characterized as those spaces which can be written as an intersection of countably many open subsets of some complete metric space. Since the conclusion of the Baire category theorem is purely topological, it applies to these spaces as well.

Generalisations

It is also possible to define the concept of completeness for uniform spaces using Cauchy netss instead of Cauchy sequences. If every Cauchy net has a limit in X, then X is called complete. One can also construct a completion for an arbitrary uniform space similar to the completion of metric spaces. The most general situation in which Cauchy nets apply is Cauchy spaces; these too have a notion of completeness and completion just like uniform spaces.

A topological space may be completely uniformisable without being completely metrisable; it is then still not topologically complete.

Suppose a random variable X (which may be a sequence (X1, ..., Xn) of scalar-valued random variables), has a probability distribution belonging to a known family of probability distributions, parametrized by θ, which may be either vector- or scalar-valued. A function g(X) is an unbiased estimator of zero if the expectation E(g(X)) remains zero regardless of the value of the parameter θ. Then X is a complete statistic precisely if it admits no such unbiased estimator of zero.

For example, suppose X1, X2 are independent, identically distributed random variables, normally distributed with expecation θ and variance 1. Then X1X2 is an unbiased estimator of zero. Therefore the pair (X1, X2) is not a complete statistic. On the other hand, the sum X1 + X2 can be shown to be a complete statistic. That means that there is no non-zero function g such that

One reason for the importance of the concept is the Lehmann-Scheffé theorem, which states that a statistic that is complete, sufficient, and unbiased is the best unbiased estimator, i.e., the one that has a smaller mean squared error than any other unbiased estimator, or, more generally, a smaller expected loss, for any convex loss function.

Lattice

This article is not about lattice filters in digital signal processing, which are electronic filters with a special recursive structure.

The Oxford English Dictionary says that a lattice is

A structure made of laths, or of wood or metal crossed and fastened together, with open spaces left between; used as a screen, e.g. in window openings and the like; a window, gate, screen, etc. so constructed.

Both of the mathematical usages treated below began as metaphors based on this concept defined in the dictionary. In the first case, geometric pictures of the simplest lattices look like lattices in the sense defined by the dictionary; in the second case, the Hasse diagrams of the posets look (in some simple cases) like the aforementioned lattices.

1. In mathematics, a lattice in Rn is a discrete subgroup of Rn which spans the real vector space Rn. Every lattice in Rn can be generated from a basis for the vector space by considering all linear combinations with integral coefficients.

Equivalently, a lattice in Rn is an n-dimensional additive free group over Z which generates Rn over R.

A simple example of a lattice in Rn is the subgroup Zn. A more complicated example is the Leech lattice, which is a lattice in R24.

Similarly, a lattice in Cn is a discrete subgroup of Cn which spans the 2n-dimensional real vector space Cn. For example, the Gaussian integers form a lattice in C.

This concept is used in materials science, in which a lattice is a 3-dimensional array of regularly spaced points coinciding with the atom or molecule positions in a crystal. This is a special case of the first meaning given above.

It also occurs in computational physics, in which a lattice is an n-dimensional geometrical structure of sites, connected by bonds, which represent positions which may be occupied by atoms, molecules, electrons, spins, etc. For an article dealing with the formal representation of such structures see Lattice Geometries.

In another mathematical usage, a lattice is a partially ordered set in which all nonempty finite subsets have a least upper bound and a greatest lower bound (also called supremum and infimum, respectively). The term "lattice" comes from the shape of the Hasse diagrams of such orders (see partially ordered set).

A lattice can also be algebraically defined as a set L, together with two binary operations ^ and v (pronounced meet and join, respectively), such that for any a, b, c in L,

If the two operations satisfy these algebraic rules then they define a partial order <= on L by the following rule: a <= b if and only if a v b = b, or, equivalently, a ^ b = a. L, together with the partial order <= so defined, will then be a lattice in the above order-theoretic sense.

Conversely, if an order-theoretic lattice (L, <=) is given, and we write a v b for the least upper bound of {a, b} and a ^ b for the greatest lower bound of {a, b}, then (L, v, ^) satisfies all the axioms of an algebraically defined lattice.

The class of all lattices forms a category if we define a homomorphism between two lattices (L, ^, v) and (N, ^, v) to be a function f : L -> N such that

f(a ^ b) = f(a) ^ f(b)
f(a v b) = f(a) v f(b)
for all a, b in L. A bijective homomorphism whose inverse is also a homomorphism is called an isomorphism of lattices, and the two involved lattices are called isomorphic.

Properties of lattices

A lattice is said to be bounded if it has a greatest element and a least element. The greatest element is often denoted by 1 and the least element by 0. If x is an element of a bounded lattice then any element y of the lattice satisfying x ^ y = 0 and x v y = 1 is called a complement of x. A bounded lattice in which every element has a (not necessarily unique) complement is called a complemented lattice.

A lattice in which every subset (including infinite ones) has a supremum and an infimum is called a complete lattice. Complete lattices are always bounded. Many of the most important lattices are complete. Examples include:

The Knaster-Tarski theorem states that the set of fixed points of a monotone function on a complete lattice is again a complete lattice.

The lattice of submodules of a module and the lattice of normal subgroups of a group have the special property that x v (y ^ (x v z)) = (x v y) ^ (x v z) for all x, y and z in the lattice. A lattice with this property is called a modular lattice. The condition of modularity can also be stated as follows: If x <= z then then for all y we have the identity x v (y ^ z) = (x v y) ^ z.

A lattice is called distributive if v distributes over ^, that is, x v (y ^ z) = (x v y) ^ (x v z). Equivalently, ^ distributes over v. All distributive lattices are modular. Two important types of distributive lattices are totally ordered sets and Boolean algebras (like the lattice of all subsets of a given set). The lattice of natural numbers, ordered by divisibility, is also distributive. A lattice is said to be completely distributive if the above distributivity law hold for arbitrary (infinite) meets and joins. Distributive lattices are used to formulate pointless topology.

Important lattice-theoretic notions

In the following, let L be a lattice.

A subset F of L is called a filter iff

A filter is proper iff it does not contain all elements of L.

A principal filter is a set of the form {xa | x in L} for some a in L. Such sets are always filters in the above sense.

A prime filter is a filter F with the additional property that for all elements a and b in L, if avb in F then either a in F or b in F. A filter where this generalizes to arbitrary (infinite) joins Vai is called completely prime.

A maximal filter is a proper filter F such that there is no proper filter that contains F. These sets are sometimes called ultrafilters. In a Boolean algebra, the principal filters are exactly the ultrafilters.

The notions ideal, proper ideal, principal ideal, and prime ideal, etc. are obtained by exchanging "≤" and "≥", "^" and "v", and "meet" and "join" in the above definitions. Thus, ideals are the dual notion of filters. However, there is no "ultra-ideal".

An element x of L is called join-irreducible iff

When the first condition is generalized to arbitrary joins Vai, x is called completely join-irreducible. The dual notion is called meet-irreducability. Sometimes one also uses the terms v-irreducible and ^-irreducible, respectively.

An element x of L is called join-prime iff

Again, this can be generalized to obtain the notion completely join-prime and dualized to yield meet-prime. Any meet-prime element is also meet-irreducible. If the lattice is distributive the converse is also true.

Limit (category theory)

In category theory, a branch of mathematics, the abstract notion of a limit captures the essential properties of universal constructions that are used in various parts of mathematics, like products and inverse limits. Accordingly, the dual notion of a colimit, or directed limit, generalizes disjoint unions and direct sums. Limits and colimits have strong relationships to the categorial concepts of universal morphisms and adjoint functors.

Definition

Before defining limits, it is useful to define the auxiliary notion of a cone of a functor. Therefore consider two categories J and C and a covariant functor F : J-> C. A cone of F is an object L of C, together with a family of morphisms φX : L -> F(X) for every object X of J, such that for every morphism f : X -> Y in J, we have F(f) o φX = φY. This situation may be depicted as a commutative diagram, more precisely as a commutative triangle with the vertices L, F(X), and F(Y). Indeed the (usually infinite) collection of all these triangles can be (partially) depicted in the shape of a cone with the point L.

A limit of a functor is just a universal cone. In detail, a cone (L, φX) of a functor F : J-> C is a limit iff for any cone (N, ψX) of F, there exists precisely one morphism u : N -> L such that φX o u = ψX for all X. We may say that the morphisms ψX factor through L with the unique factorization u.

As in the case of unique morphisms, this definition describes a balanced state of generality: The limit object L has to be sufficiently specific, in order to meet the requirement of being a cone. On the other hand, L has to be more general than any other such cone to allow for a unique factorization.

It is possible that a functor does not have a limit at all. However, if a functor has two limits then there exists a unique isomorphism between the respective limit objects, which is given by the unique factorization from one limit to the other. Thus limits are unique up to isomorphism and can be denoted by lim F.

Examples

In spite of the generality of the definition of limits, a number of special limits have been emphasized since they represent cases that can be found in many practical settings. In the following we will consider the limit (L, φX) of a functor F : J -> C.

Products. If J is a discrete category, i.e. if J has only the identity morphisms, then the L is called a product. The special case where J consists of just two objects (which we will call 1 and 2) then defines a binary product. For example, assume that C is the category Set and let J be the discrete two-element category. The binary product L will then just be the cartesian product F(1) x F(2) in Set. The morphisms φ1 and φ2 are the projections to the respective components of the tuples from L. This generalizes to arbitrary small categories J and arbitrary (infinite) cartesian products.

Another well-known product is the product topology in Top. If a partially ordered set is viewed as a category, then products are greatest lower bounds while arbitrary cones are just lower bounds. In many algebraic contexts, such as (abelian) groups, rings , boolean algebras, etc., products are just cartesian products, where the operations are defined pointwise.

Terminal object. If J is the empty category that contains no objects, then clearly the above definitions imply that every object of C is a cone of F. A limit then is an object that has a unique factorization through any other object. This is just the definition of a terminal object.

Equalizers. If J is a two-element category with two parallel morphisms from object 1 to object 2 then the limit L is called an equalizer. Practical examples of these constructions are considered in the article on equalizers.

Kernels. The special case of an equalizer where one of the morphisms is mapped to a zero morphism, the resulting limit is called a kernel.

Pullbacks. Let J be a category with the three elements a, b and c, where the only non-identity morphisms are f : a -> c and g : b -> c. The limit L is then called a pullback or a fibred product. It can nicely be visualized as a commutative square, with the diagonal φc = F(f) o φa = F(g) o φb.

All of the above examples follow a common scheme for the definition of limits: in order to model a limit construction, such as a product of sets, one uses a functor that "picks out" the relevant objects (and sometimes morphisms) from the category C. Consequently, the category J usually is small and has viewer elements than the category C. If one considers a finite category J then the above constructions can also be specified by giving the objects and morphisms that the functor F maps to. For example one may talk about an "equalizer of two morphisms" instead of calling this limit an "equalizer of a functor that maps the only two non-trivial morphisms in J to certain values".

However, J may well be a large category, i.e. one that has a proper class of objects. For example, the product of all sets exists and is just the empty set (indeed, this is the only possible cone on all families of sets that contain the empty set).

Complete categories

A limit of a functor F : J-> C is called small iff the category J is small. Similarly, a limit is finite if J is. A category C is called complete iff every functor F : J-> C, where J is small, has a limit, i.e. if all small limits in this category exist. Many important categories are complete: groups, abelian groups, sets, modules over some ring, topological spaces and compact Hausdorff spaces. The Existence Theorem for Limits states that a category is complete iff it has equalizers and arbitray (infinite) products.

It turns out that the property of having all (even large) limits is too strong to be practically relevant. Any category with this property necessarily is of a very restricted form: for any two objects there can be at most one homorphism from one object to the other.

If J is a small category and every functor from J to C has a limit, then the limit operation forms a functor from the functor category CJ to C. For example, if J is a discrete category and C is the category Ab of abelian groups, then lim : AbJ -> Ab is the functor which assigns to every J-indexed family of abelian groups its direct product. More generally, if J is a small category arising from a partially ordered set, then lim: AbJ -> Ab assigns to every system of abelian groups its inverse limit.

Functors and limits

It is a natural question to ask, which functors are compatible with the construction of limits in the sense that they map limits to limits. These functors are called continuous or limit preserving. Formally, a functor G : C -> D is continuous iff, for every small category I and every functor F : I -> C that has a limit (LX) in C, the functor GF : I -> D has the limit (G(L), GX) ). Since the Existence Theorem for Limits shows that all limits can be expressed by products and equalizers, it is sufficient for continuity if G preserves these special limits.

Important examples of continuous functors are given by representable ones: if U is some object of C, then the functor GU : C -> Set with GU(V) = MorD(U, V) for all objects V in D is continuous.

The importance of adjoint functors lies in the fact that every functor which has a left adjoint (and therefore is a right adjoint) is continuous. In the category Ab of abelian groups, this for example shows that the kernel of a product of homomorphisms is naturally identified with the product of the kernels. This illustrates that one may also say that a continuous functor commutes with the construction of limits.

Being a universal construction, limits also have other strong relationships to adjoint functors. The limit functor lim : CJ -> C (if it exists) has as left adjoint the diagonal functor C -> CJ which assigns to every object N of C the constant functor whose value is always N on objects and idN on morphisms. In particular, limit functors are continuous.

Colimits

The dual notion of limits and cones are colimits and co-cones. Although it is straightforward to obtain these definitions by inverting all morphisms in the above definitions, we will explicitly state them here:

Consider two categories J and C and a covariant functor F : J-> C. A co-cone of F is an object L of C, together with a family of morphisms φX : F(X) -> L for every object X of J, such that for every morphism f : X -> Y in J, we have φX o F(f)= φY. Again, a visualization of this situation resembles a cone (this time pointing downwards).

A colimit of a functor is a universal co-cone: a co-cone (L, φX) of a functor F : J-> C is a colimit iff for any co-cone (N, ψX) of F, there exists precisely one morphism u : L -> N such that u o φX = ψX for all X. If it exists, the colimit of F is unique up to a unique isomorphism and is denoted by colim F.

Limits and colimits are related as follows: A functor F : J -> C has a colimit if and only if for every object N of C, the functor X |-> MorC(F(X),N) (which is a covariant functor on the dual category Jop) has a limit. If that is the case, then

MorC(colim F, N) = lim MorC(F(-), N)
for every object N of C.

The category C is called cocomplete if every functor F : J -> C with small J has a colimit. The following categories are cocomplete: sets, groups, abelian groups, modules over some ring and topological spaces.

A covariant functor that commutes with the construction of colimits is said to be cocontinuous or to preserve colimits. Every functor which has a right adjoint (and is a left adjoint) is cocontinuous. As an example in the category Grp of groups the functor F : Set -> Grp which assigns to every set S the free group over S has a right adjoint (the forgetfull functor Grp -> Set) and is therefore cocontinuous.

The dual versions of the above examples are coproducts, initial objects, coequalizers, cokernels, and pushouts, respectively.

The metastatic colony is the end result of a complicated multistep process. The tumor cells from a primary tumor invade local tissue and gain access to the venous circulation (intravasation). Circulating tumor cells, singly or in clumps, are transported to target organs where they lodge in the capillary bed. Thus arrested, these tumor cells penetrate the endothelial cell lining and the underlining basement membrane to exit the circulation (extravasation).
