Specialty Definition: BOREHOLE

DomainDefinition

Environment

Hole made with drilling equipment. (references)

Mining

A hole with a drill, auger or other tools for exploring strata in search of minerals, for water supply, for blasting purposes, for proving the position of old workings, faults, and for releasing accumulations of gas or water. Source: European Union. (references)
 A. A hole with a drill, auger, or other tools for exploring strata in search of minerals, for water supply, for blasting purposes, for proving the position of old workings and faults, and for releasing accumulations of gas or water. b. A circular hole made by boring; esp. a deep hole of small diameter, such as an oil well or a water well. Also called well bore.See also:hole. (references)

Weather

Any exploratory hole drilled into the Earth or ice to gather geophysical data. Climate researchers often take ice core samples, a type of borehole, to predict atmospheric composition in earlier years. See ice core. (references)

Specialty Definition: Borehole

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

A borehole is a deep and narrow shaft in the ground used for abstraction of fluid or gas reserves below the earths surface. If the fluid reserve is under pressure, such as oil or gas, then little extra machinery is required. For water a special type of submersible pump is used to pump water up the rising main.

A well tends to be shallower and wider than a borehole.
