Manufactured by the S. Morgan Smith Company, U. S. A. , is essentially a hinged flashboard. A gate leaf is attached to a torsion cylinder, which extends beyond the full gate length into gate-operating chambers in the piers. Hydraulic(oil)cylinders located in the operating chambers turn the torsion cylinder through an angle of about 90 degrees to raise or lower the gate. Source: European Union. (references)
