Computing | Banner n. 1. The title page added to printouts by most print spoolers (see spool). Typically includes user or account ID information in very large character-graphics capitals. Also called a `burst page', because it indicates where to burst (tear apart) fanfold paper to separate one user's printout from the next. 2. A similar printout generated (typically on multiple pages of fan-fold paper) from user-specified text, e.g., by a program such as Unix's `banner(1,6)'. 3. On interactive software, a first screen containing a logo and/or author credits and/or a copyright notice. This is probably now the commonest sense. Source: Jargon File. |
Bible | Banner (1.) The flag or banner of the larger kind, serving for three tribes marching together. These standards, of which there were four, were worked with embroidery and beautifully ornamented (Num. 1:52; 2:2, 3, 10, 18, 25; Cant. 2:4; 6:4, 10). (2.) The flag borne by each separate tribe, of a smaller form. Probably it bore on it the name of the tribe to which it belonged, or some distinguishing device (Num. 2:2,34). (3.) A lofty signal-flag, not carried about, but stationary. It was usually erected on a mountain or other lofty place. As soon as it was seen the war-trumpets were blown (Ps. 60:4; Isa. 5:26; 11:12; 13:2; 18:3; 30:17; Jer. 4:6 21; Ezek. 27:7). (4.) A "sign of fire" (Jer. 6:1) was sometimes used as a signal. The banners and ensigns of the Roman army had idolatrous images upon them, and hence they are called the "abomination of desolation" (q.v.). The principal Roman standard, however, was an eagle. (See Matt. 24:28; Luke 17:37, where the Jewish nation is compared to a dead body, which the eagles gather together to devour.) God's setting up or giving a banner (Ps. 20:5; 60:4; Cant. 2:4) imports his presence and protection and aid extended to his people. Source: Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary. |

The banner of the Prophet is called Sanjek-sherif, and is kept in the Eyab mosque of Constantinople. The two black banners borne before the Califs of the house of Abbas were called Night and Shadow. The sacred banner of France is the Oriflamme (q.v.). Banners in churches. These are suspended as thank-offerings to God. Those in St. George's Chapel, Windsor, Henry VII's Chapel, Westminster, etc., are to indicate that the knight whose banner is hung up, avows himself devoted to God's service. A Banner is a flag or other piece of cloth bearing a symbol, logo, slogan or other message. Banner-making is an ancient craft.
History
Banners are mentioned in the Old Testament where they were a rallying point in battle. (Exodus 17:15)
Banners continued to be used in the Crusades and in many other wars and battles including the American Civil War.
In Siena, the annual Palio race involves the use of banners to distinguish between the individual contrade, and a silk banner is awarded to the overall winner.
Trade Union banners
In Britain, trade union banners have been made since the 1840s, and at May Day parades, they could be counted in the hundreds. The iconography of these banners included mines, mills, factories, but also visions of the future, showing a land where children and adults were well-fed and living in tidy brick-built houses, where the old and sick were cared for, where the burden of work was lessened by new technology, and where leisure time was increasing. For more on the design and making of these banners, see: Banner-making.
Church Banners
Banners in churches have, in the past, been used mainly for processions, inside or outside of the church building. However, the emphasis has, in recent years, shifted markedly towards the permanent or transient display of banners on walls or pillars of churches and other places of worship. A famous example of large banners on display is Liverpool R.C. Cathedral where the banners are designed by a resident artist. For more on the design and making of church banners, see: Banner-making.
Advertising Banners
These are often made commercially on a plastic background, but a number of British towns and cities have whole series of banners decorating their city centres, effectively advertising the town or its special features and attractions. For more on the design and making of such advertising banners, see: Banner-making.See also:

Banner Records was a United States based record label of the 20th century.Banner Records was launched in January of 1922 by the Plaza Music Company of New York City. Banner was a fairly popular label in the 1920s, concentrating on popular music of the day. The audio fidelity of the records when new was average to slightly below average for the time, but the disc records were pressed from cheap materials that did not well withstand repeated playing with the heavy phonograph reproducers of the time, so Banner Records tended to display significant surface noise and audio distortion with moderate wear. Banner's recording studio was in New York City; the recording director was Adrian Schubert, who also led the label's house band.
Early on, some Banner Records were reissues of recordings made by Emerson Records and Paramount Records using masters leased from those labels.

In 1939 the Banner label was revived by CBS, which continued to issue recordings on Banner into the LP vinyl record era.

The Banners (In Manchu: gūsa, In Chinese: 旗 qi2) were Manchu military and social organizations established by Nurhaci. The banners had hierarchical structure. The minimum unit was niru (or 佐領 zuoling in Chinese; 300 men). The next was jalan (or 參領 canling; 5 niru) and 5 jalan consisted a gūsa (banner). Of course, these were ideal numbers and their actual sizes varied substantially.

The Banners proved unable to either defeat Western powers such as Britain in the Opium Wars nor were they able to defend the dynasty against internal revolts such as the Taiping Rebellion.
By the late 19th century, the Qing Dynasty began training and creating New Army units based on Western training, equipment, and organization. Nevertheless, the banners remained in existence as a military force (albeit an ineffective one) until the fall of the Qing in 1911.
The Banner system was also applied to Mongolia but was different from the Manchu Eight Banner System. The Qing Dynasty organized the Mongols into banners (khoshuu) except those who belonged to the Mongol Eight Banners.
Each banner had sumun as nominal subdivisions, which also means arrow. In southern Mongolia, several banners made up a league (chuulghan; 盟 meng). In the rest, including northern Mongolia, northern Xinjiang and Qinghai, ayimagh was the largest administrative division. While it restricted the Mongols from crossing banner border, the dynasty protected Mongolia from population pressure from China.
