The intraspecific and interspecific transfer of genetic information by means of "naked" extracellular DNA in bacteria. The donor DNA is bound to the competent recipient cell by interaction with a DNA-binding protein associated with a DNA entry nuclease in a membrane-bound protein complex consisting of two DNA-binding monomers and two nuclease monomers.
