Medicine | A method of recovering such metals as copper and uranium from ores of low content. Leaching involves cycling reactive chemical solutions through the ore to extract metal from its matrix. In microbial leaching, the process is designed to encourage growth of organisms that help in the extraction. These organisms grow chemoautotrophically on energy released by oxidation of sulphur compounds, generating sulphuric acid and copper ions. When the copper concentration is high enough the metal is removed by electrolysis. Source: European Union. (references) |
