Sequences of DNA that are found in yeast on the indigenous 2 micrometer circle(a yeast plasmid). ARS-like elements have also been found in maize, Dictyostelium(slime mould)and Drosophila(fruit fly). They appear to be involved in the initiation of replication and have been used in rec DNA research to introduce foreign genes into yeast where they replicate independently of the host chromosome. To be stably maintained, they also require DNA from the centromere region of yeast chromosomes. Source: European Union. (references)
