Specialty Definition: Alternator

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

An alternator is a generator that produces alternating current.

Alternators are simpler, more reliable, and more efficient than direct current generators. Some direct current power supplies that appear to be direct current generators are actually alternators with inbuilt rectifiers.
