Physics	An airport noise description system under consideration by the US Federal Aviation Agency. It defines the extent of noise exposure for each aircraft type, in terms of the area defined by a maximum A-weighted sound level per aircraft event, equal to 85 dB, and a time constant per aircraft type and operation that provides a weighting based on the duration during which the level at various areas within the 85 db contour exceeds 85 dB. Included in the system is the "situation index"(SI), a linear summation of areas and durations obtained over all operations to obtain the quantity acre-minutes. Source: European Union. (references)
