Victim legends
Due to the very large number of World Trade Center casualties and missing persons, victim legends were a common form of September 11, Terrorist Attack urban legends. These were tales of victims who did not exist, spread by word-of-mouth and the Internet. Official sites, such as http://www.september11victims.com, contain accurate entries and are trusted content. Because Wikipedia, and many other websites allowed freely adding victims, there were no doubt many obvious fake entries. Fake victims added to these lists were often simply missing at the time of the attacks, or actually survivors of the attacks.

Generation Y is generally comprised of those born in the 1980s and 1990s although the exact birth years of this age demographic are currently in debate among scholars. Theoretically, this is the generation after Generation X. However, the name has yet to be widely accepted. The generation is also called the Millennial Generation, the Millennium Generation, the Echo Boomers, the Net Generation, N-Gen, Generation NeXt or "NeXters", Generation 2000, Generation Y2K, the Sunshine Generation, the Bittersweet Generation, the Hip-hop Generation, the Digital Generation, the Explorers, generation.com, e-Generation, Generation i (for Internet), the Little Boomers, the Boomlet, Generation Can-do, Generation "WHY?", the Y-inistas, and the Bridgers. The name "Newmils" is popular in the UK, as is the term Thatcher's Children. The term 'echo' is most popular in Canada, inspired by David K. Foot and Daniel Stoffman's book Boom, Bust and Echo. The Y in Generation Y comes from the X of the previous generation (Y immediately following X in the alphabet). It is usually given as beginning around 1977 or 1981.In the Generations system of authors Strauss and Howe, the Millennial Generation, as they call it, is the generation of Americans born from 1982 to 2003 (assuming that this generation has a typical length). Their typical grandparents are from the Silent Generation; their typical parents are of the baby boomers and Generation X. The Millennial name of this generation represents the fact that its birth years span the year 2000; in that regard, Bimillennial may be a better name.
In the 1980s, as divorce and abortion rates ebbed, the popular culture in the United States began stigmatizing hands-off parenting styles and recast babies as special. Child abuse and child safety became hot topics, while books teaching virtues and values became best-sellers. Politicians began to define adult issues (from tax cuts to deficits) in terms of their effects on children. Hollywood replaced child devils with child angels, and cable television and the Internet developed 'child-friendly' havens. With adults viewing children more positively, American students are apparently faring better in international comparisons.
It has been claimed that the so-called 'Millennials' are emerging as something of a generational public property. Where child Generation Xers had once been the castoffs of Awakening-era euphoria, Millennials have become symbols of an Unraveling-era need to prevent the social hemorrhaging before it could damage another new generation. However there is a feeling that the new focus has not yet reversed the Awakening-era damage to the child's world. The child poverty rate is still high. The crack babies of the 1980s are growing up with severe emotional disabilities. Dysfunctional families are still a problem, and murderers of the age of the two Columbine assailants or younger still make the news. Certain issues such as television sex and violence prompted few complaints from adults in the Awakening, but infuriate them in the Unraveling.
The Millennial generation includes such celebrities as Leann Rimes and the Olsen twins. Their non-US-born peers include Princes William and Harry of the United Kingdom and Oscar winner Anna Paquin.

A sex-determination system is a biological system that determines the development of sexual characteristics in an organism. Most common sex-determination systems in animals involve a genetic mechanism based on the chromosomes of that organism. However, other systems can involve other variables such as temperature. The details of some sex-determination systems are not yet fully understood. The most familiar sex-determination system is the XY sex-determination system found in human beings and other mammals. In the XY sex-determination system, females have two of the same kind of sex chromosome (XX), while males have two distinct sex chromosomes (XY). Some species (including humans) have a gene SRY on the Y chromosome that determines maleness; others (such as the fruit fly) use the presence of two X chromosomes to determine femaleness. There can also be other, less common, cases: see the "chromosome" article for information on abnormalities of the XY sex-determination system, and the "intersexual" article for information on variations in human sexual forms.
SRY is not the only male-determining gene in mammals, or even the most common: most non-primate mammals use a different Y-chromosome gene, UBE1, for this purpose. Also, two species of "mole voles", Ellobius tancrei and E. lutescens, have lost the Y chromosome entirely. In one species, both sexes have unpaired X chromosomes; in the other, both females and males have XX.
The WZ sex-determination system is found in birds and some insects and other organisms. In the WZ sex-determination system, the situation is reversed: females have two different kinds of chromosomes (WZ), and males have two of the same kind of chromosomes (ZZ).
The haploid-diploid system is found in Hymenoptera. Males are haploid; females are diploid. Thus, if a queen bee mates with one drone, her daughters share 3/4 of their genes with each other, not 1/2 as in the XY and WZ systems. This is believed to be significant for the development of eusociality, as it increases the significance of kin selection.
Other sex-determination systems
Many other exotic sex-determination systems exist. In some species of reptiles, including alligators, sex is determined by the temperature at which the egg is incubated. Other species, such as some snails, practice sex change: adults start out male, then become female.
Some species have no sex-determination system. Earthworms and some snails are hermaphrodites; a few species of lizard, fish, and insect are all female and reproduce by parthenogenesis.
In some arthropods, sex is determined by infection. Bacteria of the genus Wolbachia alter their sexuality; some species consist entirely of ZZ individuals, with sex determined by the presence of Wolbachia.
Other unusual systems (need confirmation of these):

Y is the twenty-fifth letter of the Latin alphabet.
See V. In Greek Υψιλον (Ypsilon) was pronounced /u/ (later on /y/, now /i/; see English MYTH and GIFT which both have /I/). The Romans borrowed Y directly from the Greek, because they felt that V no longer adequately represented Greek /y/. The English name of the letter - /waI/ - is of unknown origin. In Spanish, Y is called i griega, in Catalan i grega and in French i grec (both mean "Greek i"); in most other European languages the Greek name is still used. The letter Y was originally established as a vowel. It is now established both as a vowel and as a consoant. On Wheel of Fortune, the letter Y counts as a consonant.

Y is an abstract strategy board game invented by Craige Schenstead (now Ea Ea) and Charles Titus. It is a member of the connection game family inhabited by Hex, Havannah, TwixT, and others; it is also an early member in a long line of games that Ea Ea has developed, each game more complex but also more generalised.Y is typically played on a triangular board with hexagonal spaces; the "official" Y board has three points with five-connectivity instead of six-connectivity, but it is just as playable on a regular triangle. Schenstead and Titus' book Mudcrack Y & Poly-Y has a large number of boards for play of Y, all hand-drawn; most of them seem irregular but turn out to be topologically identical to a regular Y board.
As in most games of this type, one player takes the part of Black and one takes the part of White; they place stones on the board one at a time, neither removing nor moving any previously-placed stones, and the pie rule can be used to mitigate any first-move advantage. A simple example board, 8 spaces to a side, with periods representing empty spaces:
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .The rules are as follows:
The first player to connect all three sides of the board wins; the corners count as belonging to both sides of the board to which they are adjacent.
- Players take turns placing one stone of their colour on the board.
As in most connection games, the size of the board changes the nature of the game; small boards lend towards pure tactical play, whereas larger boards tend to make the game more strategic.
Schensted and Titus claim that Y is a superior game to Hex because Hex can be seen as a subset of Y; consider the following, with number signs representing Black stones and zeroes representing White stones:
. . . . . . # # # # . . . . . 0 . . . . . . 0 . . . . . . . 0 . . . . . . . . 0 . . . . .The portion of the board at the bottom-right can now be considered a 5x5 Hex board, and played identically. However, this sort of artificial construction on a Y board is extremely uncommon, and the games have different enough tactics out of constructed situations to be considered separate, though related.
Mudcrack Y & Poly-Y also describes Poly-Y, the next game in the series of Y-related games; after that come Star and *Star.
The simple (regular) form of Y can be played on Richard Rognlie's play-by-eMail server.

A yard (abbr. yd) is an imperial unit of length, defined as 3 feet or 36 inches, which is exactly 0.9144 metres, presuming international inches are used. The early yard was divided by the binary method into 2, 4, 8, and 16 parts called the half-yard, span, finger, and nail.
The yard derives its name from the word for a straight branch or rod, although the precise origin of the measure itself is not definitely known. Some believe it derived from the double cubit, or that it originated from cubic measure. One postulate was that the yard was derived from the girth of a person's waist, while another claim held that the measure was invented by Henry I of England as being the distance between the tip of his nose and the end of his thumb. These are believed to be more likely standardising events as opposed to an actual coining of the measure.
Several different standardisations of the yard have been produced over the years, resulting in yardsticks of various lengths. The modern yard is a compromise between the old British and American standards, and is calibrated against the metre.
A yard is also an enclosed area of land, usually tied to a building (eg. back yard, prison yard).
The Yard is the colloquial name for Scotland Yard: the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service who are responsible for policing Greater London (although not the City of London itself). See also: Liberty of the yard.

simple:year A year is the term for any period of time that is derived from the period of the orbit of the Earth (or indeed any planet) around its Sun. In astronomy, several types of year are defined:
365.256363051 days (at the epoch J2000 = 1 Jan. 2000 12h TT).
- sidereal year: the actual period for the Earth to complete one revolution of its orbit, as measured in a fixed frame of reference (such as the fixed stars, Latin sidus). Its duration is on average:
The actual duration varies from year to year because the motion of the Earth is influenced by the gravity of the Moon and other planets.
365.24218967 days (365d 5h 48m 45s) (at the epoch J2000).
- tropical year: the period for the Earth to complete one revolution with respect to the framework provided by the intersection of the ecliptic (the plane of the orbit of the Earth) and the plane of the equator (the plane perpendicular to the rotation axis of the Earth). Because of the precession, this framework moves slowly backwards along the ecliptic with respect to the fixed stars; as a consequence, the Earth completes this year before it completes a full orbit as measured in a fixed reference frame. Therefore a tropical year is shorter than the sidereal year: its duration (averaged over all tropical ecliptic points) was:
the perihelion, where the Earth is closest to the Sun (around 2 January), and
- anomalistic year: the period for the Earth to complete one revolution with respect to its apsides. The orbit of the Earth is elliptical; the extreme points, called apsides, are:
the aphelion, where the Earth is furthest from the Sun (around 2 July).
- Because of gravitational disturbances by the other planets, the shape and orientation of the orbit are not fixed, and the apsides slowly move with respect to a fixed frame of reference. Therefore the anomalistic year is slightly longer than the sidereal year: on average:
- 365.259635864 days (at the epoch J2000).
346.620075883 days (at the epoch J2000).
- eclipse or ecliptic year: the period for the Sun (as seen from the Earth) to complete one revolution with respect to a node of the Moon's orbit (the points where the Moon's orbit intersects the ecliptic). This period is associated with eclipses: these occur only when both the Sun and the Moon are near these nodes; so eclipses occur within about a month every half eclipse year. Hence the are two eclipse seasons every eclipse year. The average duration of the eclipse year is:
411.78443029 days (at the epoch J2000).
- similar to the eclipse year, there is the period for the Sun (as seen from the Earth) to complete one revolution with respect to the perigee of the Moon's orbit. This has not received much attention in astronomical literature. This period is associated with the apparent size of the Full Moon, and also with the varying duration of the synodic month. The duration of one fumocy is:
Calendars usually try to match some tropical year, because the seasons and their cardinal points are determined by this sort of year. For practical reasons, a calendar year consists of an integer number of days. In the calendar currently in use in western societies, the Gregorian calendar, most years have 365 days. In order to keep synchronized with the March equinox tropical year (365.2424 days), almost every 4th year gets 366 days: this is called a leap year. The most important current exception is the Islamic calendar, a lunar calendar without leap years, in which holidays move through the seasons.
Julian year: 365.25 days, the average length of the year in the Julian calendar.
The Gaussian year lasts 365.2568983 days, and is derived from the Gaussian gravitational constant that is expressed in units of the solar system.
Besselian year: this is a tropical year that starts when the mean Sun reaches the ecliptic longitude of 280°. This is always on or close to the 1st day of January. It is named after the 19th-century astronomer and mathematician Friedrich Bessel. An approximate formula to compute the current time in Besselian years from the Julian day is:
B = 2000 + (JD - 2451544.53)/365.242189
The distinction from one planet to another is made through use of a preceding adjective, such as: "the Martian year."

Notable Characteristics
Yttrium is a silver-metallic, lustrous rare earth metal that is relatively stable in air and chemically resembles the lanthanides. Shavings or turnings of the metal can ignite in air when they exceed 400 °C. When yttrium is finely divided it is very unstable in air. The metal has a low cross section for nuclear capture. The common oxidation state of yttrium is +3.
Applications
Yttrium oxide is the most important yttrium compound and is widely used to make YVO4 europium and Y2O3 europium phosphors that give the red color in color television picture tubes. Other uses;Yttrium has been studied for possible use as a nodulizer in the making of nodular cast iron which has increased ductility (the graphite forms compact nodules instead of flakes to form nodular cast iron). Potentially, yttrium can be used in ceramic and glass formulas, since yttrium oxide has a high melting point and imparts shock resistance and low expansion characteristics to glass.
- Yttrium oxide is also used to make yttrium-iron-garnets which are very effective microwave filters.
- Yttrium iron, aluminum, and gadolinium garnets (e.g. Y3Fe5O12 and Y3Al5O12) have interesting magnetic properties. Yttrium iron garnet is very efficient as an acoustic energy transmitter and transducer. Yttrium aluminum garnet has a hardness of 8.5 and is also used as a gemstone (simulated diamond).
- Small amounts of the element (0.1 to 0.2%) have been used to reduce grain size of chromium, molybdenum, titanium, and zirconium. It is also used to increase the strength of aluminum and magnesium alloys.
- Used as a catalyst for ethylene polymerization in laser systems.
- This metal can be used to deoxidize vanadium and other nonferrous metals.
History
Yttrium (Ytterby, a Swedish village near Vauxholm) was discovered by Friedrich Wohler in 1928 as an impure extract of yttria through the reduction of yttrium anhydrous chloride (YCl3) with potassium. Yttria (Y2O3) is the oxide of yttruim and was discovered by Johan Gadolin in 1794 in a gadolinite mineral from Ytterby. In 1843 Carl Mosander was able to show that yttira could be divided into the oxides (or earths) of three different elements. "Yttria" was the name used for the most basic one and the others were named erbia and terbia.
A quarry is located near the village of Ytterby that yielded many unusual minerals that contained rare earths and other elements. The elements erbium, terbium, and ytterbium and yttrium have all been named after this same town.
Occurrence
This element is found in almost all rare earth minerals and in uranium ores but is never found in nature as a free element. Yttrium is commercially recovered from monazite sand (3% content, [(Ce, La, etc.)PO4) and from bastnasite (0.2% content, [(Ce, La, etc.)(COO3)F]). It is commercially produced by reducing yttrium fluoride with calcium metal but it can also be produced using other techniques. It is difficult to separate from other rare earths and when extracted, is a dark gray powder.Lunar rock samples from the Apollo program have a relatively high yttrium content.
Isotopes
Natural yttrium is composed of only one isotope (Y-89). The most stable radioisotopes are Y-88 which has a half life of 106.65 days and Y-91 with a half life of 58.51 days. All the other isotopes have half lifes of less than a day except Y-87 which has a half life of 79.8 hours. The dominant decay mode below the stable Y-89 is electron capture and the dominant mode after it is beta emission. Twenty six unstable isotopes have been characterized.Y-90 exists in equilibrium with its parent isotope strontium-90, which is a product of nuclear explosions.
Precautions
Compounds that contain this element are rarely encountered by most people but should be considered to be highly toxic even though many compounds pose little risk. Yttrium salts may be cancerous. This element is not normally found in human tissue and plays no known biological role.

Lexicography | Devil's Dictionary | WRATH, n. Anger of a superior quality and degree, appropriate to exalted characters and momentous occasions; as, "the wrath of God," "the day of wrath," etc. Amongst the ancients the wrath of kings was deemed sacred, for it could usually command the agency of some god for its fit manifestation, as could also that of a priest. The Greeks before Troy were so harried by Apollo that they jumped out of the frying-pan of the wrath of Cryses into the fire of the wrath of Achilles, though Agamemnon, the sole offender, was neither fried nor roasted. A similar noted immunity was that of David when he incurred the wrath of Yahveh by numbering his people, seventy thousand of whom paid the penalty with their lives. God is now Love, and a director of the census performs his work without apprehension of disaster. X X in our alphabet being a needless letter has an added invincibility to the attacks of the spelling reformers, and like them, will doubtless last as long as the language. X is the sacred symbol of ten dollars, and in such words as Xmas, Xn, etc., stands for Christ, not, as is popular supposed, because it represents a cross, but because the corresponding letter in the Greek alphabet is the initial of his name -- Xristos. If it represented a cross it would stand for St. Andrew, who "testified" upon one of that shape. In the algebra of psychology x stands for Woman's mind. Words beginning with X are Grecian and will not be defined in this standard English dictionary. Y |
