Winifred (St.). Patron saint of virgins, because she was beheaded by Prince Caradoc for refusing to marry him. She was Welsh by birth, and the legend says that her head falling on the ground originated the famous healing well of St. Winifred in Flintshire. Winifred is a town located in Fergus County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 156.

Geography


Winifred is located at 47°33'35" North, 109°22'38" West (47.559818, -109.377108)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 156 people, 69 households, and 38 families residing in the town. The population density is 118.1/km² (305.0/mi²). There are 85 housing units at an average density of 64.4/km² (166.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.79% White, 0.00% African American, 1.28% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 1.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 69 households out of which 24.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.9% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.5% are non-families. 39.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 3.13. In the town the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 116.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 110.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $25,000, and the median income for a family is $33,393. Males have a median income of $17,321 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,600. 23.9% of the population and 17.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 42.9% are under the age of 18 and 16.0% are 65 or older.
