Specialty Definition: Weather gauge

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The term weather gauge is a naval term referring to the favorable position to the wind when moving using wind-based propulsion. Specifically, it refers to the ship (or fleet) with a position to the wind superior to that of its opponent in naval combat. Although the term is now somewhat antiquated, it is still used on occasion to describe modern naval engagements (though the usage has been somewhat changed); the term is also used by those who use sailing vessels recreationally.
