Satire | WALL :STREET:, n. A symbol for sin for every devil to rebuke. That Wall Street is a den of thieves is a belief that serves every unsuccessful thief in place of a hope in Heaven. Even the great and good Andrew Carnegie has made his profession of faith in the matter. Carnegie the dauntless has uttered his call To battle: "The brokers are parasites all!" Carnegie, Carnegie, you'll never prevail; Keep the wind of your slogan to belly your sail, Go back to your isle of perpetual brume, Silence your pibroch, doff tartan and plume: Ben Lomond is calling his son from the fray -- Fly, fly from the region of Wall Street away! While still you're possessed of a single baubee (I wish it were pledged to endowment of me) 'Twere wise to retreat from the wars of finance Lest its value decline ere your credit advance. For a man 'twixt a king of finance and the sea, Carnegie, Carnegie, your tongue is too free! Anonymus Bink. Source: Devil's Dictionary. |
Computing | Wall interj. [WPI] 1. An indication of confusion, usually spoken with a quizzical tone: "Wall??" 2. A request for further explication. Compare octal forty. 3. [Unix, from `write all'] v. To send a message to everyone currently logged in, esp. with the wall(8) utility. It is said that sense 1 came from the idiom `like talking to a blank wall'. It was originally used in situations where, after you had carefully answered a question, the questioner stared at you blankly, clearly having understood nothing that was explained. You would then throw out a "Hello, wall?" to elicit some sort of response from the questioner. Later, confused questioners began voicing "Wall?" themselves. Source: Jargon File. |
Bible | Wall Cities were surrounded by walls, as distinguished from "unwalled villages" (Ezek. 38:11; Lev. 25:29-34). They were made thick and strong (Num. 13:28; Deut. 3:5). Among the Jews walls were built of stone, some of those in the temple being of great size (1 Kings 6:7; 7:9-12; 20:30; Mark 13:1, 2). The term is used metaphorically of security and safety (Isa. 26:1; 60:18; Rev. 21:12-20). (See FENCE.). Source: Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary. |

Literature | Wall (The), from the Tyne to Boulness, on the Solway Firth, a distance of eighty miles. Called- The Roman Wall, because it was the work of the Romans. Agricola's Wall, because Agricola made the south bank and ditch. Hadrian's Wall, because Hadrian added another vallum and mound parallel to Agricola's. The Wall of Severus, because Severus followed in the same line with a stone wall, having castles and turrets. The Picts' Wall, because its object was to prevent the incursions of the Picts. The wall of Antoninus, now called Graeme's Dyke, from Dunglass Castle on the Clyde to Blackness Castle on the Forth, was made by Lollius Urbicus, legate of Antoninus Pius, A.D. 140. It was a turf wall. Wall To give the wall. Nathaniel Bailey's explanation of this phrase is worth perpetuating. He says it is "a compliment paid to the female sex, or those to whom one would show respect, by letting them go nearest the wall or houses, upon a supposition of its being the cleanest. This custom," he adds, "is chiefly peculiar to England, for in most parts abroad they will give them the right hand, though at the same time they thrust them into the kennel." To take the wall. To take the place of honour, the same as to choose "the uppermost rooms at feasts." (Matt. xxiii. 6.) At one time pedestrians gave the wall to persons of a higher grade in society than themselves. "I will take the wall of any man or maid of Montague's."- Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet, i. l. To go to the wall. To be put on one side; to be shelved. This is in allusion to another phrase, "Laid by the wall"- i.e. dead but not buried; put out of the way. To hang by the wall. To hang up neglected; hence, not to be made use of. A cell wall is a more or less solid layer surrounding a cell. They are found in most bacteria, fungi, plants, and algae. Animals and most other protists have cell membranes without surrounding cell walls.
Plant cell walls
Plant cell walls have two main functions: to provide rigidity for the cell, and to prevent expansion when water enters the cell. Made of insoluble cellulose fibres meshed in to a matrix of carbohydrates called pectates and hemicelluloses, they give the plant strength and support. The cell wall is generally permeable to anything entering the cell in solution unless impregnated with lignin in wood or suberin in cork tissue to produce wood. The primary cell wall, built by the plant first, is composed of cellulose microfibrils aligned at all angles. Microfibrils are held together by hydrogen bonds to provide a high tensile strength. After the maximum size necessary has been reached, a secondary wall is constructed below. Unlike the primary wall, the microfibrils are aligned mostly in the same direction, and with each additional layer the orientation changes slightly.
Cell walls of neighbouring cells are held together by a shared gelatinous membrane called the middle lamella, which contains magnesium and calcium pectates (salts of pectic acid).
Bacterial cell walls
Cell walls of bacteria are primarily used for protection against hostile envorinments or, in the case of pathogenic bacteria, against the immune system of the host. They contain peptidoglycan, which can be made visible in Gram-positive bacteria by Gram staining. The cell walls of bacteria are also vital for containing the high osmotic pressure inside bacterial cells caused by the high concentration of solutes in the cytoplasm, which can often be as high as 15 atmospheres. Many antibiotics, including penicillin and its derivatives, target the cell wall of bacteria.
Fungal cell walls
The cell walls of fungal cells are composed of chitin, the same carbohydrate that gives strength to the exoskeletons of insects. They serve a similar purpose to those of plant cells, giving fungal cells rigidity and strength to hold their shapes.

Defensive walls were common from the ancient period into the medieval period. Generally, these are referred to as city walls, although there were also walls, such as the Great Wall of China and the Atlantic Wall, which extended far beyond the borders of a city and were used to enclose vast regions.City walls were still occasionally used as late as the 19th Century although by this time they were generally of wood (rather than stone) construction and used only around small frontier settlements. City walls also had towers and were frequently surrounded by trenches.
The practice of building these massive walls had been developed sometime before the rise of the Sumerian Empire and was connected with the rise of city-states.
Oftentimes the walls proved impenetrable to attacking armies which then laid siege to the city.
Within walled cities, the poor and "noxious trades" were generally located near or outside the walls.
China
Chinese cities occasionally have remnants of city walls that were built in the Ming Dynasty and designed to withstand artillery bombardment. Chinese cities generally outgrew their walls, which fell into disrepair in the Qing dynasty. The walls of Xian are still well-preserved.
- Great Wall of China
The walls of Beijing were demolished during the 1960s to open large streets around the city. A metro line also follows the location of the former city walls.
Walled villages can still be found in Mainland China and Hong Kong.
Croatia
- Dubrovnik City Walls - highly preserved city fortificatiom including towers, gate, rampart walk and two citadels guarding the docks.
England
Fragments of London Wall the wall that once surrounded the Roman town of Londinium are still visible just outside the Museum of London.
The remnants of the city walls of York are both a shortcut above the streets and, as in many places, a tourist attraction.
- Chester, England
France
- Aigues-Mortes
- Carcassonne
- Maginot Line
Germany
The German Democratic Republic claimed that the Berlin Wall was not defensive; but rather was intended to prevent unauthorized emigration.
- Brandenburg
- Neubrandenburg
- Rostock
Israel
- The walls of Akko (Acre) - 18th century modern Ottoman fortification able to withstand cannons attack. The wall has been restored and now includes rampart for tourists.
Middle East
- Jerusalem's Old City Walls
- Jericho's Ancient City Walls - probably the most ancient stone wall ever discovered.
Morocco and Western Sahara
In the 1980s Morocco built a system of sand wall defenses, the Western Sahara walls, to keep the Polisario out of the Western Sahara.
Spain
Portions of a Roman wall are still standing in Barcelona, and many Spanish cities, such as Avila and Toledo, have medieval walls.
Turkey
- Istanbul

A wall is a usually solid structure that separates space in buildings into rooms, or protects or delineates a space in the open air. Walls have two main purposes: to support roofs and ceilings, and to divide space, providing security against intrusion and weather. Before the invention of artillery, many European cities had protective walls. Since they are no longer relevant for defense, the cities have grown beyond their walls, and many of the walls have been torn down.
The term "the Wall" frequently referred to the Berlin Wall, erected during the Cold War, which fell in 1989.

Line drawing showing the lining of the GI tract: colorectal (muscularis). The walls of the digestive tract have four layers of tissue: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa and serosa. The inner-most layer is the mucosa, a membrane that forms a continuous lining of the GI tract from the mouth to the anus. In the large bowel, this tissue contains cells that produce mucus to lubricate and protect the smooth inner surface of the bowel wall. Connective tissue and muscle separate the muscosa from the second layer, the submucosa, which contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, nerves and mucus-producing glands. Next to the submucosa is the muscularis externa, consisting of two layers of muscle fibers-one that runs lengthwise and one that encircles the bowel. The fourth layer, the serosa, is a thin membrane that produces fluid to lubricate the outer surface of the bowel so that it can slide against adjacent organs.
