Casualties Planes - World Trade Center - Pentagon
A - B - C - D - E - F - G - H - I - J - K - L - M - N - O - P - Q - R - S - T - U - V - W - X - Y - ZAs of October 29, 2003, 2,995 people were presumed dead as a result of all four September 11 attacks. This includes the casualties at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, on the airplanes and the hijackers.
Planes
265 people killed on four planes; 232 passengers, 25 flight attendants, 8 pilots. (Note that this total includes the 19 hijackers, who reportedly boarded the planes as passengers.)

Missing Persons
The number of missing people grew to estimates as high as over 6000 in the months following the attack, but steadily declined as stories were checked and duplicate entries removed. (See Timeline of WTC missing).
As of August 2002, there were approximately 90 people who were officially missing; that is, their remains had not been identified and no family members had requested a death certificate.

Survivors
The great majority of the over 40,000 people working at the World Trade Center at the time of the attack evacuated safely, including 18 who escaped from above the impact zone in the second tower hit. By 9/20/2001 6291 people, including rescue and recovery workers, had been treated for injuries.

Pentagon
The Pentagon reports 125 staffers killed or missing, with 121 remains recovered and identified, as of Sept. 11, 2002. At least one person died later as a result of wounds incurred.

The Pentagon reports 4 staffers missing. One passenger on the airliner which hit the Pentagon was also never identified.

Victim legends
Due to the very large number of World Trade Center casualties and missing persons, victim legends were a common form of September 11, Terrorist Attack urban legends. These were tales of victims who did not exist, spread by word-of-mouth and the Internet. Official sites, such as http://www.september11victims.com, contain accurate entries and are trusted content. Because Wikipedia, and many other websites allowed freely adding victims, there were no doubt many obvious fake entries. Fake victims added to these lists were often simply missing at the time of the attacks, or actually survivors of the attacks.

Tungsten (formerly wolfram) is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol W and atomic number 74. A very hard, heavy, steel-gray to white transition metal, tungsten is found in several ores including wolframite and scheelite and is remarkable for its robust physical properties. The pure form is used mainly in electrical applications but its many compounds and alloys are widely used in many applications (most notably in light bulb filaments and in space-age superalloys).

Notable characteristics
Pure tungsten is a steel-gray to tin-white hard metal. Tungsten can be cut with a hacksaw when it is very pure (it is brittle and hard to work when impure) and is otherwise worked by forging, drawning, or extruding. This element has the highest melting point (3422 °C), lowest vapor pressure and the highest tensile strength at temperatures above 1650 °C of all metals. Its corrosion resistance is excellent and it can only be attacked slightly by most mineral acids. Tungsten metal forms a protective oxide when exposed to air. When alloyed in small quantities with steel, it greatly increases its hardness.
Applications
Tungsten is a metal with a wide range of uses, the largest of which is as tungsten carbide (W2C, WC) in cemented carbides. Cemented carbides (also called hardmetals) are wear-resistant materials used by the metalworking, mining, petroleum and construction industries. Tungsten is widely used in light bulb and television tube filaments, as well as electrodes, because it can be drawn into very thin metal wires that have have a high melting point. Other uses;
Miscellaneous: Oxides are used in ceramic glazes and calcium/magnesium tungstates are used widely in fluorescent lighting. The metal is also used in X-ray targets, heating elements for electrical furnaces. Salts that contain tungsten are used in the chemical and tanning industries. Tungsten 'bronzes' (so called due to the colour of the tungsten oxides) along with other compounds are used in paints.
- A high melting point also makes tungsten suitable for space-oriented and high temperature uses which include electrical, heating, and welding applications.
- Hardness and density properties make this metal ideal for making heavy metal alloys that are used in armaments, heat sinks, and high-density applications, such as weights and counterweights.
- High speed tool steels (Hastelloy ®, Stellite ®) are often alloyed with tungsten, with tungsten steels containing as much as 18% tungsten.

History
Tungsten (Swedish tung sten meaning "heavy stone") was first hypothesized to exist by Peter Woulfe in 1779 who examined wolframite (which was later named for Woulfe) and concluded that it must contain a new substance. In 1781 Carl Wilhelm Scheele ascertained that a new acid could be made from tungstenite. Scheele and Berman suggested that it could be possible to obtain a new metal by reducing tungstic acid. In 1783 José and Fausto Elhuyar found an acid in wolframite that was identical to tungstic acid. In Spain later that year the brothers succeeded in isolating tungsten through reduction of this acid with charcoal. They are credited with the discovery of the element.
Biological role
Enzymes called oxidoreductases use tungsten in a way that is similar to molybdenum by using it in a tungsten-pterin complex.On August 20, 2002 officials representing the US based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that urine tests on leukemia patient families and control group families in the Fallon, Nevada area had shown elevated levels of the metal tungsten in the bodies of both groups. 16 recent cases of cancer in children were discovered in the Fallon area which has now been identified as a "Cancer Cluster." Dr. Carol H. Rubin, a branch chief at the CDC, said data demonstrating a link between tungsten and leukemia are not available at present.
Occurrence
Tungsten is found in the minerals wolframite (iron-manganese tungstate, FeWO4/MnWO4) , scheelite (calcium tungstate, CaWO4), ferberite and huebnerite. Important deposits of these minerals are in Bolivia, California, China, Colorado, Portugal, Russia, and South Korea (with China producing about 75% of the world's supply). The metal is commercially produced by reducing tungsten oxide with hydrogen or carbon.
Compounds
The most common oxidation state of tungsten is +6. Other oxidation states of tungsten are +2, +3, +4, +5, but it exhibits all oxidation states from -2 to 6. Tungsten typically combines with oxygen to form the yellow tungstic oxide, WO3, which dissolves in aqueous alkaline solutions to form tungstate ions, WO42-.
Aqueous polyoxoanions
Aqueous tungstate solutions are noted for the formation of polyoxoanions under neutral and acidic conditions. As tungstate is progressively treated with acid, it first yields the soluble, metastable "paratungstate A" anion, W7O246-, which over hours or days converts to the less soluble "paratungstate B" anion, H2W12O4210-. Further acidification produces the very soluble metatungstate anion, H2W12O406-, after equilibrium is reached. The metatungstate ion exists as a symmetric cluster of twelve tungsten-oxygen octahedra known as the "Keggin" anion. Many other polyoxoanions exist as metastable species. The inclusion of a different atom such as phosphorus in place of the two central hydrogens in metatungstate produces a wide variety of the so-called heteropolyanions.
Isotopes
Naturally occurring tungsten is made of five radioisotopes that have such absurdly long half lifes that for most practical purposes are considered stable. 27 other radioisotopes have been characterized, with the most stable being W-181 with a half-life of 121.2 days, W-185 with a half-life of 75.1 days, W-188 with a half-life of 69.4 days and W-178 with a half-life of 21.6 days. All of the remaining radioactive isotopes have half-lifes that are less than 24 hours, and the majority of these have half-lifes that are less than 8 minutes. This element also has 4 meta states, with the most stable being W-179m (t½ 6.4 minutes).The isotopes of tungsten range in atomic weight from 157.974 amu (W-158) to 189.963 amu (W-190). The primary decay mode before the most abundant isotope, W-184, is electron capture, and the primary mode after is beta decay. The primary decay products before W-184 are element 73 (tantalum) isotopes, and the primary products after are element 75 (rhenium) isotopes.

W is the twenty-third letter of the modern Latin alphabet.A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z
W was invented in the 7th century by Anglo-Saxon writers, it was originally a double U (hence its English name, because the /w/ sound was spelled "uu"). The Latin /w/ sound developed into Romance /v/; therefore V no longer adequately represented Germanic /w/. In German - like in Romance - the phoneme /w/ was lost, this is why German W represents /v/ rather than /w/. In Dutch, W is an approximant (with the exception of words with EEUW, which have [-e:w]).
In the Swedish and Finnish alphabets, "W" is seen as a variant of "V" and not a separate letter. It is however recognised and maintained in names, like "William".

The W boson is an elementary particle, having an electric charge of just ±1, a mass of 80.4110 GeV (about 80 times the proton's mass), and weak isospin of the same. There exist three varieties of W bosons: positively-charged types, negatively-charged (antiparticles of each other) types, and the Z boson, which possesses no charge whatsoever. The discovery of the W Boson occurred in 1983, during a series of SPS accelerator-based experiments being conducted by Carlo Rubbia and Simon Van der Meer, working at the CERN laboratory. For their efforts, they were awarded the Nobel Prize, one year later.W and Z bosons mediate the weak nuclear force. The W Boson is best known for mediating reactions for nuclear decay (fission). For example
(neutron decays into proton + electron + anti-neutrino). This reaction is known as beta decay. The opposite process also occurs:
- n → p + e− +
νe(proton + electron goes to neutron + neutrino) and is called electron capture. Since protons are not fundamental particles (they are made up of quarks), it is the quarks that interact. The first example is then
- p + e− → n + νe
and then the W− decays into an electron and electron-type neutrino.

That the W and Z bosons have mass is something of a conundrum. The W and Z are accurately described by a SU(2)xU(1) Gauge theory, but the bosons in a gauge theory must be massless. The photon is also massless because the photon and electromagnetism are described by a U(1) gauge theory. Some mechanism is required to break the SU(2) symmetry, giving mass to the W and Z in the process. The most popular is called the Higgs mechanism, and requires an extra particle, the Higgs Boson.
The combination of the SU(2) gauge theory describing the W and Z, the electromagnetic interaction, and the Higgs mechanism is known as the Glashow-Weinberg-Salam model. Glashow, Weinberg, and Salam won the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work. These days it is very widely accepted, and has been adopted as part of the standard model of particle physics. At the present time (Sep 25, 2001), the only missing piece of this model is the Higgs Boson.

The W Window System is a graphical windowing system and is the precursor in name and concept to the modern X Window System.W was originally developed at Stanford University by Paul Asente and Brian Reid, and originally ran under V. In 1983, Paul Asente and Chris Kent ported the system to UNIX on the VS100, giving a copy to those working at MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science.
In 1984, Bob Scheifler of MIT replaced the synchronous protocol of W with an asynchronous alternative and named the result X.

The pages of a website will be accessed from a common root URL, the homepage, and usually reside on the same physical server. The URLs of the pages organize them into a hierarchy, although the hyperlinks between them control how the reader perceives the overall structure.
Overview
A website will often be the work of one person, one organization, or on a particular topic, or have a particular purpose. This is quite a blurry definition, given the hypertext nature of the web: the whole of Wikipedia forms a website, but whether the Meta-Wikipedia pages are part of the same website or a sister website is open to debate.
Web sites are written in HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) and are accessed using special software called web browsers. Plugins are available for browsers which allow them to show active content, such as Flash, Shockwave or applets written in Java. Some interactive content may also be generated with JavaScript, support for which is built-in for most browsers. An emerging standard called Dynamic HTML is starting to make an appearance, though no standard has been formally adopted yet.

There are numerous types of websites, each specializing in a particualr service or use. A few types of websites include:
Many websites are a mixture of types. For example, a business web site may promote the business's products, but may also host informative documents, such as white papers. There are also numerous sub-categories to the ones listed above. For example, a porn site is a specific type of eCommerce site or business site (that is, it is trying to sell memberships for access to its site). A fan site may be a vanity site on which the administrator is paying homage to a celebrity.
- Business site: used for promoting a business or service
- Commerce site or eCommerce sites: for purchasing goods, such as Amazon.com
- Download site: strictly used for downloading electronic content, such as software, game demos or computer wallpaper
- Information site: contains content that is intended merely to inform visitors, but not necessarily for commercial purposes; such as: RateMyProfessors.com
- Shock site: includes images or other material that is intended to be offensive to most viewers
- Vanity site: run by an individual or a small group (such as a family) that contains information or any content that the individual wishes to include
- Wiki site: a site for people to contribute to material and exchange ideas (such as Wikipedia)
Many business websites, have all the appearance of brochures—that is an advertisement that can be strolled around. Some websites act as vehicles to communicate with other people: Webchat.
The content of a website is constrained by the hosting computer's power, and also legally, e.g. by copyright, pornography laws, etc.

West is most commonly a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography.
West is the direction towards which the sun sets at the equinox. It is one of the four cardinal points of the compass, upon which it is considered the opposite of East, and at right angles to North and South.
"The West" also often refers to Western countries. When used in this sense, it could mean anything from NATO, Europe and North America with or without Japan to whole Judeo-Christian civilisation. This meaning of the word merges with the concept of Western society.
"West" can also refer to the American West, especially during the end of the 19th century. It is also called the "Old West". Compare The Frontier.
