In Greek mythology, Urania ("queen of the mountains") was the muse of astronomy and astrology. She was the mother of Linus by Apollo. She is usually depicted as having a globe in her left hand and a peg in the right.

Urania is a town located in La Salle Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 700.

Geography


Urania is located at 31°51'46" North, 92°17'29" West (31.862835, -92.291261)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.80% is water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 700 people, 274 households, and 201 families residing in the town. The population density is 218.0/km² (563.5/mi²). There are 311 housing units at an average density of 96.8/km² (250.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.00% White, 0.71% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 2.29% from two or more races. 2.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 274 households out of which 33.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.9% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 23.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.03. In the town the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.6 males. The median income for a household in the town is $25,625, and the median income for a family is $29,167. Males have a median income of $22,404 versus $18,125 for females. The per capita income for the town is $10,517. 24.0% of the population and 18.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 32.6% are under the age of 18 and 23.7% are 65 or older.
