Specialty Definition: TRIBAL DESIGNATED STATISTICAL AREA

DomainDefinition

Census

A statistical entity delineated for the Census Bureau by a federally recognized American Indian tribe that does not have a land base (a federally recognized reservation or off-reservation trust land). A TDSA generally encompasses a compact and contiguous area that contains a concentration of people who identify with a federally recognized American Indian tribe and in which there is structured or organized tribal activity. For the 1990 census, it could not cross a state line, but it may do so for Census 2000. For the 1990 census, TDSAs included state recognized tribes without a land base; these are now called state designated American Indian statistical areas. (references)
