In oil refineries, the most commonly used distillation column internal is the tray. This is a horizontal plate covering the whole column cross-section, except for the "downcomers". . . The plate is perforated to allow passage of gas. In operation, liquid flows on the tray from a downcomer and into a highly turbulent froth made by bubbling and jetting of gas from the perforations. The froth is held on the tray for a short time by the weir, then flows over into another downcomer. (1). Source: European Union. (references)

Specialty Definition: Tray

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

A tray is a shallow container designed for carrying things. Trays are flat, but with raised edges to stop things from sliding off them. They are often rectangular, and may or may not have handles with which to carry them.

An example of a tray is a tea tray (or "tea-tray"), which is used to carry cups of tea. The poem "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Bat!", which appears in the children's book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, suggests that the bat is "like a tea-tray in the sky".
