TIDAL POWER

Specialty Definition: TIDAL POWER

DomainDefinition

Energy

The power available from the rise and fall of ocean tides. A tidal power plant works on the principal of a dam or barrage that captures water in a basin at the peak of a tidal flow, then directs the water through a hydroelectric turbine as the tide ebbs. (references)
Energy obtained by using themotion of the tides to run water turbines that drive electric generators. (references)

Specialty Definition: Tidal power

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The tides have great potential for future power and electricity generation. Tidal power is predictable (unlike wind energy and solar power) and renewable, tapping the virtually infinite amount of the earth's rotational energy. The efficiency of tidal power generation largely depends on the amplitude of the tidal swell, which can be up to 10m where the periodic tidal waves funnel into rivers and fiords. Amplitudes of up to 17m occur for example in the Bay of Fundy, where tidal resonance amplifies the tidal waves.

Several smaller tidal power plants have recently started generating electricity in Norway. They all exploit the strong periodic tidal currents in narrow fiords using sub-surface propellers.

MOCIE is considering the possibility of implementing Dr. Gorlov's tidal power generation system in the Ultolmok. (references)

In 1999, Dr. Alexander Gorlov, a U.S. scientist in the hydro energy field, first introduced the possible applications of tidal power in Korea. (references)

The Ultolmok is a historically famous site where Admiral Lee, Sun-shin of Choson dynasty fought against Japanese invaders, overpowering them by utilizing the tidal power of the narrow bay. In addition to Ultolmok, industry sources indicate that there are many other sites suitable for tidal power farms in South and North Korea along the western and southern coastal areas. (references)
