Slang in 1811 | TAYLOR. Nine taylors make a man; an ancient and common saying, originating from the effeminacy of their employment; or, as some have it, from nine taylors having been robbed by one man; according to others, from the speech of a woollendraper, meaning that. Charles Edward "Charlie" Taylor (May 24, 1868 - January 30, 1956) built the engine used by the Wright brothers in their early aircraft, the Flyer. Taylor also built the wind tunnel used by the Wrights to test models of their designs.Initially Taylor was hired to fix bicycles, but increasingly took over the running of the bicycle side of the business as the the Wright brothers spent more and more time on their inventions.
When it because clear that an off-the-shelf engine with the required power-to-weight ratio was not available in the USA, the Wrights turned to Taylor to design and construct one. Talor built the aluminum, water-cooled engine from scratch and without drawings in only six weeks.
When Calbraith Perry Rodgers made his trip from Long Island to California in 1911 in his newly-bought Wright aircraft, he paid Taylor $70 a week (a large sum at the time) to be his mechanic. Taylor followed the flight by train, frequently arriving at the next rendezvous before Perry Rodgers, to make any required repairs and prepare the aircraft for the next day's flight.
Taylor saved enough money from his adventures to buy several hundred acres of farmland near Salton Sea. However the economic climate of the time eventually brough him to poverty. He died peniless and alone in hospital in 1956.
Although largely ignored by history, it would be wrong to think the Wright Brothers exploited Taylor or took credit for his achievements. All three of these early pioneers were close friends and Taylor remained in close contact with the last surviving Wight brother, Orville, until Orville's death in 1948.
Charlie Taylor is buried at the the Portal of the Folded Wings in Burbank, CA, a shrine to aviation history.

John Taylor (June 22, 1704 - April 4, 1766), English classical scholar, was born at Shrewsbury. His father was a barber, and, by the generosity of one of his customers, the son, having received his early education at the grammar school of his native town, was sent to St John's College, Cambridge. In 1732 he was appointed librarian, in 1734 registrar of the university. Somewhat late in life he took orders, became rector of Lawford in Essex in 1751, and canon of St Paul’s in 1757. He died in London on April 4, 1766.
Taylor is best known for his editions of some of the Greek orators, chiefly valuable for the notes on Attic law, e.g. Lysias (1739); Demosthenes Contra Leptinem (1741) and Contra Midiam (1743, with Lycurgus Contra Leocratem), intended as specimens of a proposed edition, in five volumes, of the orations of Demosthenes, Aeschines, Dinarchus and Demades, of which only vols. ii. and iii. were published.
Taylor also published (under the title of Marinor Sandvicense) a commentary on the inscription on an ancient marble brought from Greece by Lord Sandwich, containing particulars of the receipts and expenditure of the Athenian magistrates appointed to celebrate the festival of Apollo at Delos in 374 BC. His Elements of Civil Law (1755) also deserves notice. It was severely attacked by Warburton in his Divine Legation, professedly owing to a difference of opinion in regard to the persecution of the early Christians, in reality because Taylor had spoken disparagingly of his scholarship.

Mary Elizabeth Bliss (daughter)Occupation: soldier Political Party: Whig Vice President: Millard Fillmore Nicknames: Old Rough and Ready Zachary Taylor (November 24, 1784 - July 9, 1850), also known as "Old Rough and Ready", was the 12th (1849-1850) President of the United States, and the second President to die in office.
Biography
Taylor was a career soldier. Starting with a commission as a first lieutenant, in 1808, he fought in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and the Second Seminole War. President Polk sent an army under his command to the Rio Grande in 1846. When the Mexicans attacked Taylor's troops, Polk declared war. Taylor defeated the Mexicans, despite being outnumbered 4-1. He became a national hero and received the Whig nomination for President in 1848, although he had never even bothered to vote before.
Taylor earned a footnote in Presidential history before he even took office. His term of service was scheduled to begin at noon on March 4, 1849, but being a Sunday, Taylor refused to be sworn in until the following day. Vice President Millard Fillmore also was not sworn on that day. As a result, the nation technically had no President or Vice President for one day. Some people later claimed that David Rice Atchison, the previous President Pro Tempore of the Senate, was technically Acting President, but this claim is rejected by virtually every constitutional scholar.
After participating in ceremonies at the Washington Monument on a blistering July 4, 1850, Taylor fell ill; he died of acute indigestion five days later, after just 16 months in office. Taylor was succeeded by his vice president, Millard Fillmore.
