TUALATIN

Specialty Definition: Tualatin, Oregon

Tualatin is a city located in Oregon. It is named for the Tualatin River, which flows along most of its northern boundary. A post office with the spelling Tualitin was established November 5, 1869. In the 1880s, the settlement was sometimes called Bridgetown because of the nearby bridge, the first built over the Tualatin river. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 22,791.

Geography

Tualatin is located at 45°22'29" North, 122°46'12" West (45.374808, -122.770067)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 20.2 km² (7.8 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 22,791 people, 8,651 households, and 5,804 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,131.1/km² (2,928.5/mi²). There are 9,218 housing units at an average density of 457.5/km² (1,184.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.89% White, 0.79% African American, 0.69% Native American, 3.62% Asian, 0.37% Pacific Islander, 4.84% from other races, and 2.81% from two or more races. 11.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,651 households out of which 39.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% are non-families. 24.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 35.6% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 5.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $55,762, and the median income for a family is $68,165. Males have a median income of $47,004 versus $32,210 for females. The per capita income for the city is $26,694. 5.5% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.9% are under the age of 18 and 3.8% are 65 or older.
