The Council of Ephesus was held in Ephesus, Asia Minor in 431 under Emperor Theodosius II, grandson of Theodosius the Great. Approximately 200 Bishops were present. It was the Third Ecumenical Council. It was chiefly concerned with Nestorianism.According to the Council, Nestorianism overemphasized the human nature of Jesus Christ at the expense of the divine. The Council denounced Patriarch Nestorius' teaching as erroneous. Nestorius asserted that Jesus Christ is one person, not two separate "people": the Man, Jesus Christ and the Son of God, Logos. The Council decreed that Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God (Logos), is complete God and complete man, with a rational soul and body. The Virgin Mary is "Theotokos" because she gave birth not to man but to God who became man. The union of the two natures of Christ took place in such a fashion that one did not disturb the other.
The Council also declared the text of the Nicene Creed decreed at the First and Second Ecumenical Councils to be complete and forbade any additional change (addition or deletion) to it.

The following are the results of the 2003 California recall election held on October 7, 2003 which unseated Gray Davis and propelled actor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the governorship. It was a two-question ballot, with the first question being whether the sitting governor should be recalled. The second question was to decide who ought to replace the governor, in case a majority voted yes on the recall question.
The voters of California decided to recall governor Gray Davis by a 5 to 4 margin (55.4% in favor of recall vs. 44.6% against recall).
There were more votes for Schwarzenegger than for the next three candidates combined, including fellow Republican McClintock. Voters elected Arnold Schwarzenegger to become Davis's replacement by a plurality of 48.6% to runner-up Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante's 31.5%.
Following the election, all 58 of California's counties had 28 days (until November 4, 2003) each to conduct a countywide canvass of their votes. Counties used this time to count any absentee ballots or provisional ballots not yet counted, to reconciliate the number of signatures on the roster of registered voters with the number of ballots recorded on the ballot statement, to count any valid write-in votes, to reproduce any damaged ballots, if necessary, and to conduct a hand count of the ballots cast in 1% of the precincts, chosen at random by the elections official.
Counties then had 7 days from the conclusion of canvassing (November 11, 2003, 35 days after the election) to submit their final vote totals to the California Secretary of State's office. The Secretary of State had to certify the final statewide vote by 39 days (until November 15) after the election. The vote was officially certified on November 14, 2003. Once the vote was certified, governor-elect Schwarzenegger had to be sworn-in to office within 10 days. His inauguration took place on Monday, November 17, making Schwarzenegger the 38th Governor of California.

The String Quartet No. 3 by Béla Bartók was written in September 1927 in Budapest. The work is in one continuous stretch with no breaks, but is divided in the score into four parts:
Despite Bartók calling the third section a "recapitulation" it is not a straight repetition of the music from the prima parte, being somewhat varied and simplified. Although not marked as such, the coda is in fact a telescoped recapitualtion of the seconda parte.
- Prima parte: Moderato
- Seconda parte: Allegro
- Recapitulazione della prima parte: Moderato
- Coda: Allegro molto
The mood of the first part is quite bleak, contrasting with the second part which is livlier and provides evidence of the inspiration Bartók's drew from Hungarian folk music, with dance-like melodies to the fore.
The work is even more harmonically adventurous and contrapuntally complex than Bartók's previous two string quartets and explores a number of extended instrumental techniques, including sul ponticello (playing with the bow over the fingerboard), col legno (playing with the wood rather than the hair of the bow), glissandi (sliding from one note to another) and the so-called Bartók pizzicato (plucking the string so that it rebounds against the instrument's fingerboard).
It has often been suggested that Bartók was inspired to write the piece after hearing a performance of Alban Berg's Lyric Suite (1926) in 1927. The piece is widely considered to be the most tightly constructed of Bartók's six string quartets, the whole deriving from a relatively small amount of thematic material integrated into a single continuous structure. It is also Bartók's shortest quartet, with a typical performance lasting around fifteen minutes.
The work is dedicated to the Musical Society Fund of Philadelphia and was entered into an international competition for chamber music run by the organisation. It won the $6,000 first prize jointly with a work by Alfredo Casella. The piece was premiered on February 19, 1929 by the Waldbauer-Kerpely Quartet.
The piece was first published in 1929 by Universal Edition.

The Symphony No. 3 in D minor by Gustav Mahler was written between 1893 and 1896. It is his longest piece, with a typical performance lasting around two hours. As is usual in Mahler, the piece is written for a large orchestra, consisting of four flutes and piccolos, four oboes, cor anglais, clarinets, bass clarinet, four bassoons, double bassoon, ten French horns, ten trumpets, four trombones, tuba, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, tamtam, triangle, snare drum, Rute, glockenspiel, bells, two harps, organ, violins, violas, cellos, and double basses.
As in his Symphony No. 2, Mahler adds vocal forces to the later movements of the piece. The fourth movement is a song for alto, and the fifth movement adds a women's chorus and a boys' chorus.
In its final form, the work has six movements:
As with each of his first four symphonies, Mahler originally provided a programme of sorts to explain the narrative of the piece. In the third symphony this took the form of titles for each movement:
- Kräftig entschieden (Strong and decisive)
- Tempo di Menuetto (In the tempo of a minuet)
- Comodo (Scherzando) (Comfortably, like a scherzo)
- Sehr langsam--Misterioso (Very slowly, misteriously)
- Lustig im Tempo und keck im Ausdruck (Happy in tempo and bold in expression)
- Langsam--Ruhevoll--Empfunden (Slowly, tranquil, deeply felt)
All these titles were dropped before publication in 1898.
- "Pan Awakes, Summer Marches In"
- "What the Flowers of the Meadow Tell Me"
- "What the Creatures of the Forest Tell Me"
- "What the Night Tells Me"
- "What the Morning Bells Tell Me"
- "What Love Tells Me"
There was originally a seventh movement, "What the Child Tells Me", but this was eventually dropped, becoming instead the last movement of the Symphony No. 4.
The third movement quotes extensively from Mahler's early song "Ablösung im Sommer". The fourth is a setting of Friedrich Nietzsche's "Midnight Song" from Also sprach Zarathustra, while the fifth, "Es sungen drei Engel", is one of Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn songs.
The piece is rarely performed, due in part to its great length. When it is performed, a short interval is often taken between the first movement (which alone lasts around half an hour) and the rest of the piece.
The second movement of this work was arranged by Benjamin Britten for a smaller orchestra, a version published by Boosey and Hawkes in 1950.

Ages: Second Age - Third Age - Fourth Age
The Third Age began after the downfall of Sauron, when he was defeated by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men following the downfall of Númenor.
This age was characterized by waning of the Elves, the rise and decline of the exiled Númenorean kingdoms, and the slow recovery of Sauron's power.
It lasted for 3021 years, until Sauron was again defeated, this time finally, when his Ruling Ring was destroyed. When the Ringbearers left Middle-earth for the Uttermost West, the Fourth Age began.

The Third Crusade began in 1189 as an attempt to reconquer the Holy Land from Saladin.
Egypt after 1169 was ruled by the powerful Seljuk Turks, whose great champion Saladin made it the object of his life to drive the Christian power from Palestine. Control of both Egypt and Syria allowed Saladin to surround the Crusader kingdom; on July 4, 1189, Saladin won the Battle of Hattin, and on October 2 Jerusalem surrendered. Christian power was restricted to Antioch, Tripoli, Tyre, and Margat.
Pope Gregory VIII wished to enlist the help of the kings of England and France to take back what had been lost; in response, Henry II of England and Philip II of France ended their war with each other, and both imposed a "Saladin Tithe" on their subjects to pay for a new Crusade. However, England and France soon renewed their war, and Henry II's son Richard began a rebellion against Henry as well.
Frederick I Barbarossa also responded to the Pope's call, and was the first to depart in 1189. Frederick faced opposition from the Byzantine Emperor Isaac II Angelus, who had made a secret treaty with Saladin. Frederick passed through Byzantine land as quickly as possible, and captured the Seljuk capital of Iconium on May 18, 1189. Unfortunately for his crusade, the emperor drowned in the Saleph River on June 10, 1190. Although he had a larger army than Saladin, without his leadership his troops immediately began to break up, and those who remained were quickly defeated in battle when they reached Syria.
Richard and Philip travelled by sea, though separately, to the Holy Land in 1191. On the way, Richard stopped at Cyprus, where he took offense at his treatment by the independent Byzantine ruler of the island. By the end of May, he had conquered the whole island, and later sold it to Guy of Lusignan, the nominal King of Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, Philip had arrived at Tyre and allied himself with Conrad of Montferrat, who also claimed the kingship of Jerusalem. The two besieged Acre in April, 1191, with help from the remnants of Frederick's army, and Richard arrived to take charge of the siege in June. Saladin's army attempted to break the siege, but were turned away, and the city was taken on July 12. The three Christian commanders fought for power amongs themselves; Leopold of Austria, the German commander, wanted to be recognized equally with Richard and Philip, but Richard removed Leopold's banner from the city. Philip, also frustrated with Richard, left the Holy Land in August.
On August 22, Richard executed the 3000 Muslim prisoners he still had in his custody at Acre, when he felt Saladin was not honouring the terms of Acre's surrender.
Richard then decided to take the port of Jaffa, which he would need to launch an attack on Jerusalem; while on the march, Saladin attacked him at Arsuf in September, but Richard won a resounding victory.
By January of 1192, Richard was ready to march on Jerusalem, but Saladin had reinforced his army and fortified the city. Richard came within sight of Jerusalem twice, but each time retreated in the face of Saladin's larger army. Saladin then attempted to retake Jaffa in July, but was defeated by Richard's now much smaller force on July 31.
On September 2, 1192, Richard and Saladin finalized a treaty by which Jerusalem would remain under Muslim control, but which also allowed unarmed Christian pilgrims to visit the city. Richard left for England at the end of September, ending the Crusade.
The Germans who remained in the Holy Land after the Crusade formed the basis of the Teutonic Knights. The failure of the Third Crusade would also lead to the call for the Fourth Crusade six years later.
