Health | Lymphocytes responsible for cell-mediated immunity. Two types have been identified - cytotoxic (T-lymphocytes, cytotoxic) and helper T-lymphocytes (T-lymphocytes, helper-inducer). They are formed when lymphocytes circulate through the thymus gland and differentiate to thymocytes. When exposed to an antigen, they divide rapidly and produce large numbers of new T cells sensitized to that antigen. (references) |

Shown is a close-up of scientist's hands holding three test tubes. The one on the left contains normal healthy t-lymphocytes, notice the pellet on the bottom. The middle vial has t-cells that have been infected with the AIDS virus HIV also known as HTLV-III; note the pellet has been destroyed since the cells have died. The test tube on the right contains t-lymphocytes that were exposed to the AIDS virus but since they were protected by AZT, the cells were not destroyed and the pellet stayed intact. Credit: John Crawford (photographer). | Shown are electron micrographs of the family of retroviruses that reproduce in t-lymphocytes. Retroviruses, which cause a variety of naturally occurring cancers in many animal species, also cause cancers in human beings. The first two human retroviruses to be discovered and characterized, human t-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) and type II (HTLV-II), have been associated with the human cancers known, respectively, as adult t-cell leukemia and hairy cell leukemia. HTLV-III is the AIDS virus, now called HIV-I. Epidemiologic studies have shown that HTLV-I infection and t-cell malignancy both cluster in certain geographic areas and in certain populations, and suggest that transmission occurs in the household, through sexual contacts, and perhaps at birth. Health | Immunological studies on sarcoidosis patients show that many of the immune functions associated with thymus-derived white blood cells, called T-lymphocytes or T-cells, are depressed. (references)
The heightened cellular immune response in the diseased tissue is characterized by significant increases in activated T-lymphocytes with certain characteristic cell-surface antigens, as well as in activated alveolar macrophages. (references)
