Literature

Syenite A granite so called from Syene, in Egypt, its great quarry. Source: Brewer's Dictionary.

Mining

A group of plutonic rocks containing alkali feldspar (usually orthoclase, microcline, or perthite), a small amount of plagioclase (less than in "monzonite"), one or more mafic minerals (esp. hornblende), and quartz, if present, only as an accessory; also, any rock in that group; the intrusive equivalent of "trachyte." With an increase in the quartz content, syenite grades into "granite." Its name is derived from Syene, Egypt. A.G. Werner in 1788 applied the name in its present meaning; the Egyptian rock is agranite containing much quartz. (references)

Specialty Definition: Syenite

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Syenite is a coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock of the same general composition as granite but with the quartz either absent or present in relatively small amounts. The feldspars are alkaline in character and the dark mineral is usually hornblende. Soda-lime feldspars may be present in small quantities. The term syenite was originally applied to hornblende granite like that of Syene in Egypt, from which the name is derived. Syenite is not a common rock, some of the more important occurrences being in New England, Arkansas, Montana, New York (syenite gneisses), Switzerland, Germany, and Norway.
