St. Elmo is a city located in Fayette County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,456.

Geography


St. Elmo is located at 39°1'36" North, 88°51'7" West (39.026709, -88.852062)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.04% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 1,456 people, 564 households, and 394 families residing in the city. The population density is 585.6/km² (1,521.6/mi²). There are 621 housing units at an average density of 249.8/km² (649.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.90% White, 0.07% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. 0.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 564 households out of which 35.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% are non-families. 28.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.01. In the city the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $30,750, and the median income for a family is $36,544. Males have a median income of $29,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,048. 12.7% of the population and 12.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.8% are under the age of 18 and 15.4% are 65 or older.
