Biographical Satire | SAM, Uncle, a tall, lean, good-natured rich man who sets paces and spends his money. Born July 4, 1776, S. Great Britain. Godfathered by France. Was an impetuous baby. Education: School of experience at Washington. S. was assisted in early life by a number of men who took an interest in him. When thirty-six years of age he chastised his mother, but later became on excellent terms. Went in for land and colonization business. Succeeded. At the age of eighty-four S. suffered from a severe attack of internal indiscretion. Recuperated slowly. Later entered the trust-raising business, and devoted considerable time to politics. In 1897 he spanked a European power, but had to take care of the children after the incident. S. is either Republican or Democratic. Favors the former, although once in awhile he desires change. Wore a goatee, long hair, high hat, a suit made out of the flag, smoked cigarettes, had bad manners, and used much slang. Publications: Bank notes. Ambition: Another Republican president. Address: Washington, D. C., U. S. A. Epitaph: (If he ever gets one he deserves it.). Source: Who was Who: 5000BC - 1914. |

Literature | Sam Uncle Sam. The United States Government. Mr. Frost tells us that the inspectors of Elbert Anderson's store on the Hudson were Ebenezer Wilson and his uncle Samuel Wilson, the latter of whom superintended in person the workmen, and went by the name of "Uncle Sam." The stores were marked E.A.- U.S. (Elbert Anderson, United States). and one of the employers, being asked the meaning, said U.S. stood for "Uncle Sam." The joke took, and in the War of Independence the men carried it with them, and it became stereotyped. To stand Sam. To be made to pay the reckoning. This is an Americanism, and arose from the letters U.S. on the knapsacks of the soldiers. The government of Uncle Sam has to pay, or "stand Sam" for all. (See above. Source: Brewer's Dictionary. |

The Books of Samuel are two books in the Bible Old Testament and Hebrew Tanach. The Septuagint translators regarded the books of Samuel and of Kings as forming one continuous history, which they divided into four books, which they called "The Books of the Kingdom." The Vulgate version followed this division, but styled them "The Books of the Kings." These books of Samuel they accordingly called the "First" and "Second" Books of Kings, and not, as in the modern Protestant versions, the "First" and "Second" Books of Samuel.
The authors of the books of Samuel were probably Samuel, Gad, and Nathan. Samuel is believed to have penned the first twenty-four chapters of the first book. Gad, the companion of David (1 Sam. 22:5), is believed to have continued the history thus commenced; and Nathan is believed to have completed it, probably arranging the whole in the form in which we now have it (1 Chronicles 29:29).
The contents of the books
The first book comprises a period of about a hundred years, and nearly coincides with the life of Samuel. It containsThe second book, comprising a period of perhaps fifty years, contains a history of the reign of David
- the history of Eli (1-4)
- the history of Samuel (5-12)
- the history of Saul, and of David in exile (13-31).
These books do not contain complete histories. Frequent gaps are met with in the record, because their object is to present a history of the kingdom in its gradual development, and not of the events of the reigns of the successive rulers.
- over Judah (1-4), and
- over all Israel (5-24), mainly in its political aspects. The last four chapters of Second Samuel may be regarded as a sort of appendix recording various events, but not chronologically.
It is noticeable that the section (2 Sam. 11:2-12: 29) containing an account of David's sin in the matter of Bathsheba is omitted in the corresponding passage in 1 Chr. 20.

sam is an editor under the Plan 9 operating system. There are Microsoft Windows and X-Windows ports available. sam was originally designed in the early 1980s for the DMD 5620, Bell Labs' windowing terminal. It aims to emulate the ed editor, but with extended capabilities, such as editing multiple files at once. It does this by opening a window dedicated to "watching" each file, and standard ed commands can be, in a sense, directed to the current file set.
Real editing power is offered by Plan 9's mouse chording capabilities, however this is available to any Plan 9 window, whether terminal or editor, not just sam.

Sam is the code-name for the main fictious spy character on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Spynet children's program. An active field operator, she is stationed in an unmarked van, parked outside of an office building (which in real-life is the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto.)Graduating at the top of her NET Spy School class, Sam is especially skilled at surveillance, hand to hand combat, disguise and radio/video operations.
Her parents disappeared, without a trace when she was only eight-years-old, their whereabout are unknown to Sam. She has, however, recieved a videotape of her father, wishing her good luck with her life. It was taped shortly before he was dispatched as on a new, top secret mission. With the vanishing of her family, she moved in with an aunt, uncle and two young cousins. All of this family has been continuously scrutized by authorities for their criminal activities. Sam maintains very little contact with this family.
To prove her worth after failing the Armed Forces Black Ops training, she successfully enrolled with the National Espionage Taskforce. She is quite eager to prove herself, making her an excellent agent; however, this same attribute also causes her to threaten security, as she tasks many unnecessary risks. In the NET, she reports to Pendleton, her Field Operatives Supervisor.
The CBC says that her locator device has a code number of XZ DSDSFF68-29512R136; this is a continuity problem, it is exactly the same as Pendleton.

Samwise Gamgee, a character from J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy world Middle-earth, is Frodo Baggins' servant who proves to be the most loyal of the Fellowship of the Ring. A gardener by trade, Sam is a simple Hobbit of plain speech, who loves Elves and knows a bit about rope making. He lives with his father, known as The Gaffer, on Bagshot Row in the Shire, close to Bag End where Frodo lives.Warning: Wikipedia contains spoilers
As "punishment" for eavesdropping on Gandalf's conversation with Frodo regarding the dangers of the One Ring, Sam is made Frodo's first companion on his journey to Rivendell in the beginning of The Lord of the Rings. Sam saves Frodo's life more than once during the quest to destroy the Ring, and he accompanies him to the bitter end.
After Shelob attacks and seemingly kills Frodo, Sam takes the Ring intending to complete the quest. Because he holds the Ring for a couple days, he is considered one of the Ring Bearerss. Sam discovers that Frodo is alive in Cirith Ungol and rescues him.
By many people's interpretation, Sam Gamgee was the "true hero" of Tolkien's story: only he is of strong enough will to renounce the Ring of his own free will.
In the 1981 BBC radio serial of The Lord of the Rings, Sam is played by William Nighy. In the movies The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), Sam is played by Sean Astin. It is not clear whether Astin had heard Nighy's radio performance, but both actors bring very similar characterisations (and accents) to the role.
