Dream Interpretation | To find yourself on a roof in a dream, denotes unbounded success. To become frightened and think you are falling, signifies that, while you may advance, you will have no firm hold on your position. To see a roof falling in, you will be threatened with a sudden calamity. To repair, or build a roof, you will rapidly increase your fortune. To sleep on one, proclaims your security against enemies and false companions. Your health will be robust. Source: Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted .... |

Mining | A. The rock immediately above a coal seam. It is commonly a shale and is often carbonaceous in character and softer than similar rocks higher up in the roof strata. The roof shale may contain streaks and wisps of coaly material, which tends to weaken the deposit. Roof in coal mining corresponds to hanging wall in metal mining. See also:roof ston b. In mine timbering there are two classifications of roof, the immediate roof and the main roof. The immediate roof lies directly over the coal and may be a single layer or several layers of rock material of the same, or different consistencies, and from a few inches to several feet in thickness. This roof requires timbering to support it as the coal is removed. The main roof is the roof above the immediate top, and may vary from a few feet to several hundred, or even thousands of feet in thickness. This roof is generally controlled by leaving pillars of solid coal that will support its weight c. The country rock bordering the upper surface of an igneous intrusion.CF:floor. (references) |

A roof is the top covering of a building. Flat roofs are often covered with tar and gravel and provided with drains to run off rain and snow. Variously shaped roofs are built to naturally shed water. These include straight, curved, and hipped styles. Some building styles, for example, geodesic and A-frame, blur the distinction between wall and roofs. Pitched roofs are often covered with asphalt shingles (in the US) although thatch, wood shake, steel, slate and tile roofs are common elsewhere. Newer systems include solar shingless which generate electricity as well as cover the roof.Several systems of construction transmit the weight of the roof to the walls of the building and tie the roof into the structure. These include: king (queen) post, truss, rafter
By extension one can speak of the roof of a tent, automobile, etc. A convertible is an automobile built with a folding, retracting, or removable roof.

A roof garden is any garden on the roof of a building. The garden may be on the roof of an autonomous building that takes care of its own water and waste. The related idea of a living machine is based on the most basic mode of gardening: dumping wastes (compost and sewage, appropriately broken down, usually in some specialized ditch or container) on the soil, and harvesting food which, when processed, generates compost, and when eaten, generates sewage. In most of the world, this kind of very tight closed loop gardening is employed, despite certain health risks if modern technologies and methods are not employed.
