Ponca is a city located in Dixon County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,062. It is the county seat of Dixon County6.

Geography


Ponca is located at 42°33'50" North, 96°42'38" West (42.563964, -96.710563)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²). 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 1,062 people, 403 households, and 286 families residing in the city. The population density is 585.8/km² (1,508.2/mi²). There are 425 housing units at an average density of 234.4/km² (603.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.89% White, 0.00% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 1.60% from two or more races. 2.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 403 households out of which 35.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% are non-families. 25.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.00. In the city the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $31,750, and the median income for a family is $41,250. Males have a median income of $28,472 versus $21,681 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,782. 8.6% of the population and 7.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.5% are under the age of 18 and 12.1% are 65 or older.
