Physics | In plasma physics this term describes the motion of a charged particle moving in a magnetic field. Although the definition varies, one typically defines the pitch angle as arctan (v_perp / v_parallel), where v-parallel is the component of the particle's velocity parallel to the magnetic field, and v-perp is the perpendicular component. The pitch angle is then zero when the particle moves purely parallel to the field, and 90-degrees when the particle has no parallel velocity at all. (references) |
